Why Stations Use Gay Personalities?

Gay sounding disc jockeys are rampant these days on radio stations.  I don’t have any idea with radio stations in Metro Manila, but stations in Cebu, Cagayan de Oro, Davao and Iligan City small markets like Ozamiz City and Pagadian City are making use of gay sounding DJs.

Real or not, these newer talents have caught the attention of not only the masa listeners but also the ears of discriminating and conservative people. The question is why do radio broadcast companies allow these kind of personalities. This article however does not entail discrimination of the third sex community. This post aims to present the both sides of the situation.

The very obvious reason why radio stations start to use gay sounding DJs on the air is simply the need to get noticed among a crowd of many Hot AC stations. This article uses the term “gay sounding” since “these” personalities don’t necessarily have to be gay in real life.

In a small market in Ozamiz City, radio station DXLM FM 97.5 has been a consistent top rating station. Much of this success is attributed to their music and their odd but catchy on air personalities, one of which is characterized by a DJ named Madonna – a male DJ who pretends to be gay.

Madonna catches the attention of the listeners through his bubbly talks and utter gay lingos that typify humorous content. So far the trick was working. DXLM retains much of its audience who are considered to be among the masa listeners.

Not everyone however is not happy with gays doing bla-blas on the air. Some listeners get offended with their nonsense talks that sometimes bear green and unfit-for-broadcast content. I wonder why the Kapisanan Ng Mga Broadcasters are not doing anything with this matter.

  1. I see no problem on having gay DJ’s though they, as you’d written-“sometimes bear green and unfit-for-broadcast content”.

  3. actually there is no problem with gay DJs as long as they behave, Gay DJs are no different to DJs who are good. DJs are supposed to be performers not just talkers unlike DJs in some radio stations who are just fluent in speaking the lingo, but not really a total performer after all!
