ABS-CBN Radio Cotabato Plays “Laswa” Songs

MOR ABS-CBN Cotabato

MOR ABS-CBN CotabatoRecently we received this comment post from our dear reader. We thought sharing our reply to this reader will also be of concern to you radio people. We’ve heard similar cases before but this one really did catch my attention. Our reader goes by the name of Jake. And I believe this guy is an avid radio listener. I think he is just really concerned about what stations should supposedly play on the air! So here is his comment.

Anu ba pwede magawa dito?

Alright, before I posted this article I made a research about M.O.R. Cotabato and through Wikipedia, I found out that indeed there is an ABS-CBN Regional FM station in Cotabato City. Jake didn’t exactly tell what he was asking for, but I think what he meant was that could it be possible for a radio station to overly play local songs produced using midi files grabbed out from Videoke materials.

Firstly, I have to say that it is legal for radio stations to play local music in one hour. In fact, it is a mandate from the Kapisanan ng mga Brodkaster sa Pilipinas to play an average of four OPM songs in a single hour.

If ABS-CBN Radio M.O.R. Cotabato is playing ten local songs in an hour, well maybe its their playlist. I suppose the local music you are referring to are bisrock bands or bands that play Cebuano songs. However, I should say that I’m not sure if it’s legal to play songs that are produced illegally too. I mean, I don’t think making songs out of a videoke material is legitimate especially if you are making money out of it.

MOR ABS-CBN CotabatoBut ABS-CBN My Only Radio Cotabato can get away with this if these “laswa” songs you are referring to are parodies. Parodies are joke songs or shall we say spoof versions of original ones. But playing ten parodies in an hour is unbelievable!

You asked if “anong pwedeng gawin dito” ? Well, I don’t think I have to figure out if it’s annoying because I believe it already is! The best thing that you should do right now is contact ABS-CBN My Only Radio Cotabato and tell them about your concerns. Tell them honestly that you don’t like their songs. I mean, I don’t believe you’re the only guy in town who seems to be bored with their playlist. If the management insists that it’s their format or it’s their PD’s directive to play 10 local songs in an hour then so be it. At least you still have other radio stations to tune in to.

I’m afraid you are not alone in this Jake, as here in Cebu, even the MOR here seems to have a problem with their playlist too. ABS-CBN Radio 97.1 here in Cebu sometimes play bisrock songs that sounds annoying in fact, you get to hear often times revival of songs that sound more often than not very horrible! We cannot actually blame stations that do operate on the masa formats because whether we like it or not, there are also some groups of people who like to listen to these songs.

But I’d like to take this opportunity to heed to radio stations. Please, regulate and try to review your playlist. Make it sure that your choice of songs are balanced and not biased. There’s nothing wrong with being a masa station, just cut the crap about over commercialism! To ABS-CBN Radio Cotabato, maybe your air crew needs some seminar. KBP in this chapter should review that station too.
