Campus Radio’s John Hendrix Returns to GMA

John Hendrix

Who does not know John Hendrix, one of the legendary DJ’s of the now defunct WLS 97.1 Campus Radio. John Hendrix is one of those loved voices on the radio in the heydays of Top 40 radio in Manila or in the Philippines, for that matter. That classic, friendly voice is something that we really miss.

John Hendrix became more popular when he did a TV stint on GMA 7 in the 90s for a Sunday music video show called Campus Video. His disc jockeying skills made him a natural VJ.

Like many other careers, there comes a crisis in one’s life and DJs are not immune to it. We’re talking about management changes, format changes or station closing shop.

It was a sad day for Campus Radio fans when the station ceased airing to make way for the new format Barangay LS in 2007. Some of the Campus Radio DJs were retained and tried to adjust by nose diving from a Top 40 to a masa format sound. However, the DJs were so used to the coño delivery, that their take on “street lingo” type of adlibing didn’t just cut it.

John Hendrix’s footprints on the airwaves though was still heard in the late 2000s, when Campus Radio was revived on 99.5 on May 2008. Below is an aircheck by my friend Jimmy Habitan.

But Campus 99.5’s on air presence was short lived. It only lasted for four months.

In 2011, John Hendrix is back on his home network GMA, as a TV Host for a pet-oriented show called “dogTV”. John is joined by Mace Licuanan, Janine Ngo, Fred Alimusa and Sharon Yu.

dogTV is a magazine show filled with segments for dog lovers everywhere, showcasing ways on how tokeep your pet healthy and happy on K9 HealthLine; teaching your dogs new tricks on Follow the Leader; checking out cool stuff for your dog on Canine Product Review; learning about the different kinds of canines on Breed 360; updating yourself on the latest canine events on dogTV Rover; learning more about celebrities and their pets on Dogstar.

dogTV airs every Saturday 10 am on GMA News TV Channel 11.

While John Hendrix may not be dishing out pop tunes on this new show, the former radio DJ is doing a great job as a TV host, proof that a talent is a talent, regardless of the medium.
