iFM 93.9 is DWKC FM, the flagship FM radio station of Radio Mindanao Network.
The iFM monicker started in 2002, however, the first airing of the station dates back to 1978. Back then it was known as 93.9 WKC a pop music leaning station, which targeted the C-D-E market. Among its famous personalities back in the day was Baby Michael, whom we know now as Mike Enriquez on GMA 7’s 24 Oras.
The C-D-E format of the station lasted until November of 1999. It then flipped to a Top 40 programming catering to high end audience. 939 KCFM became the new brand and incorporated the slogan “Live It Up”.
The rebranding was nationwide which was based on pulling out the last two letters of the call sign and removing the point or dot on the frequency.
For instance, their Dagupan FM station DWON would be called 104-7 ON FM, with the dial point read as one-o-four-seven.
The Iligan station DXIX was rebranded to 102-3 IXFM and Cagayan De Oro’s DXVM to 99-1 VM FM
Chico and Delamar was among the famous on air personalities during the “Live It Up” era.
The Top 40 sound was short-lived though. In 2002, DWKC plunged into a masa format and thus born 93.9 iFM created by well known program Fred Davis, the brain behind Love Radio and Yes FM.
The station earlier used the slogan “Ang FM Mo I-FM Ko” (your FM is IFM). They also mixed in a new tagline “Pinalakas” to highlight their improved signal and launch of HD broadcast.
Aside from the use of imported jingles from the US, specifically from Dallas-based company TM Century (now TM Studios), the station also had their own jingles. iFM syndicated the DRQ and WTIC jingle packages.
iFM produced in-house jingles, showcasing local artists like Sarah Geronimo and Gloc 9, and Regine Velaquez and revamping their entire imaging to center on the theme “sa iFM siguradong enjoy ka”, with the leadership of Production Chief Van Omega, who also voices the station.
Last year, iFM continued the tradition of customized, localized imaging by producing full length imaging song or station ID jingles, which incorporates a 7-note logo.
Among its present popular DJs are Pakito Jones, Megandang Megan, Yummy Yumi and Kitchie Daldal. Kuya Jobert, a former evening announcer, left the station to become a full-time TV personality/comedian on ABS-CBN’s Banana Split.
Today, IFM 93.9 is currently in TOP 5 most listened to FM stations in Metro Manila.
