UR 105.9 To Close Shop, Opens First Facebook Radio

UR 105.9 Will Become UR FaceRadio

So another radio station, a rock station, in fact is closing shop. UR 105.9  a sister station of RJ 100 will cease to broadcast on the air. However, the station is migrating into a full blown internet radio station.

In an Inquirer article, the management revealed launching an Facebook-exclusive radio station, claiming to be the first Facebook radio station, although a lot of Philippine stations have already been broadcasting on Facebook through Ustream or Livestream.

So, I am not sure about the station’s claim.

“I think we’re the first radio station in the Philippines to broadcast direct from Facebook,” said Ramon Jacinto II (owner of UR105.9) in an exclusive interview with the Philippine Daily Inquirer Tuesday.

The station will be branded as UR FaceRadio and will be launched on May this year. Their page is http://www.facebook.com/URFaceradio

Recently, other defunct stations have gone internet based.

Defunct Philippine Stations That Went All Online Broadcast

  1. WRock FM used to have an all internet radio broadcast, but now is closed.
  2. NU107 Cebu which was rebranded as Win Radio, is going underground, you can visit the website at http://nu107cebu.com/live-access.html
  3. Campus Radio, the Barangay LS predecessor, is also online at http://www.campusradioonline.com/
  4. 103.5 Max FM, after becoming 103.5 Wow FM, turned to the internet as Global Max Radio http://www.globalmaxradio.com/

It’s very strange and ironic to see that rock radio stations like NU 107 and RJ 105.9 are shutting down, despite the fact that we’ve got plenty of rock bands popping out everywhere, every now and then. I’m trying to imply that the rock music industry is doing well.

While it’s sad to hear that stations are ceasing on air broadcast, it’s exciting to know about their migration to online radio. My observation is that mainstream radio has become so mainstream that it left no room for niche radio formats.

These are one of those hardest days for station owners, disc jockeys, particularly, and of course the listeners. But it’s time for a move on. Radio followers are very comfortable with the idea of internet radio.

  1. I think the difference between UR’s facebook and iRadio is you dont have to leave their FB page. Para mas convenient ba! But yes…sad sad news for rock radio indeed! If you read the whole article, nag le-lease lang pala ang UR. Which leads me to think that somebody else bought the station from its real owners para gawing masa! Pera pera nalang! Tsk tsk. Here’s the full article that I found:

Sana ang kotse pwedeng makakuha ng online radio! Pero basta may mga banda, hindi patay ang industriya!

  2. i am sorry to say that the staff and crew of UR105.9 got it all wrong. the first commercial radio station in the whole Philippines having an FB application is DYNU FM (NU 107.5 CEBU). it started last year at around the last quarter.

    this is the link: http://apps.facebook.com/nu107cebu

and, it is also incorporated in iRadio Portal, made by the same guy who created the NU CEBU fb application: http://apps.facebook.com/iRadioPortal

hope you guys be enlightened on the matter. thank you and let NU107 CEBU fb and its creator be accorded the honor and recognition it rightfully deserves.

    peace and rock on!!! \m/

  3. This is crap! I thought RJ UR will continue NU’s Journey. The radio market will end up with pang-masa. Why can’t they cater to at least sub-niche (B, C, D) or niche? It’ll be bad news if 105.9 will go masa.

  4. Since when did UR105.9 started their broadcast on Facebook???

NU107 Cebu had a live access Facebook app started in September last year to March of this year. It was removed when the station re-branded as Win107.

NU107Cebu Live Access Facebook App is now Pilipinas iRadio Portal Facebook App…I change the name and added radio stations streaming in Ustream and Livestream including NU107 Cebu underground and UR105.9 RJ underground.
