10 Reasons Why Filipinos Listen To Internet Radio

Why Internet Radio is Becoming Popular?

The internet radio scene in the country is not that bullish yet but judging from the growing list of stations, businesses and listeners are definitely considering streaming radio as part of modern Filipinos’ media consumption. Here are the 10 reasons.

1. Commercial-free music – listeners prefer tuning in to internet radio than to the traditional radio for the absence of commercials. Stations like Blazin100.com and AtlantisRadio.net don’t air many or no commercials.

Businesses and even internet cafes go for these commercial-free web stations because they are suitable as in-store radio. Most establishments hesitate to re-lay traditional radio broadcasts onto their customers because they don’t want to air commercials that may come from competitors.

2. Niche programming – the traditional radio spectrum offers basically the same type of formats, “masa” (Hot AC), Top 40. The present list of Philippine internet radio stations, however, offers a variety of programming that over-the-air broadcasts do not.

On the web, you can listen to stations that play Classical Filipino, OPM rock, rap, and Gospel music to name a few.

3. Local Appeal – internet radio stations are popular among OFWs or overseas Filipino Workers due to lack of programming in their area that appeal to them. Stations that cater to this crowd are usually operated by OFWs.

Programming may include talk shows that offer advice such as the Buhay OFW show on Cyber Pinoy Radio (www.cyberpinoyradio.net).

4. Nostalgia – every one has grown up listening to a certain station that is why online stations such as Y101 FM Cebu are a click to listeners abroad. Most of the original programs and DJs on the station are still around after the Cebu-based station first opened in the 80s.

Defunct stations like WRock Manila, Max FM and Campus Radio have already gone online.

But it’s not only the nostalgic station name that most listeners are after of, it’s also the music nostalgia. Due to corporate and ratings pressures, traditional stations may no longer be playing songs that have once topped the charts but unfortunately do not fit the current ratings-hungry programming of most terrestrial stations.

Internet radio programmers have more creative and programming control because they don’t have to worry about ratings, this means, more music variety for listeners.

5. Multi and Social Media Enhanced Interactivity – compared to the conventional radio, internet radio stations are more listener-engaging. With station websites integrating social media like Facebook and Twitter, the audience can participate in discussions through chat widgets and discussion boards. A listener may also participate as a co-host using video streaming services like Stickam, Ustream or Livestream.

6. New Music/Artists Discovery – nowadays, artists and bands have more chances of exposure than before. Most internet radio stations are willing to play unsigned artists that are fit for their format. Blazin100.com recently included Wizhfulltinkers, Shuffled, and Bethany onto their playlist.

Blazin100.com does not accept payment in order to feature an independent artist. Most traditional stations would require monetary means just so a band can have their song played on air. This does not only help save artists money, but it’s also a big help to the local music industry.

7. Aggregated Information – internet radio stations now deliver and relay information in a multitude of ways. For instance, internet stations display the title of the songs on their website, a feature not available on traditional radio.

They are also able to distribute relevant and real time news through social media.

8. Innovation – the internet has so much to offer, it will not be long before every household in the country will be hooked. The internet has also gone more mobile than ever before. And every internet radio website will be there to improve as the internet revolution continues.

9. Listener-engaging playlist – because web stations are more listener-focused, their programming is more influenced on what listeners like to hear.

The integration of request boxes and even instant request airplays, give audiences more power on the playlist.

10. Talk-free programming – while online radio stations carry the same programming they have over the air, internet-based stations have lesser talks and fewer interruptions. Unless, it’s a talk format, internet stations have more songs covered in an hour, usually 12 to 13, than the 8 or 9 songs heard on FM radio.

GMA Network’s flagship FM station DWLS FM 97.1 sports a new strapline “Tugstugan Na” in response to tightening competition among local “masa” (Hot AC) stations in Metro Manila, Philippines.

Visit official website at www gmanetwork com

This new branding hopes to further reinforce DWLS’ commitment to be the leading FM radio choice of Metro Manila listeners. In an interview via 24 Oras earlier tonight, the DJs of the station expressed that the new branding will bring in more fun and music entertainment while retaining its talk-based programs like Barangay Love Story.

With the new slogan “Tugstugan Na!”, is the station now leaning to a more rhythmic programming? The catchphrase is a play of the terms “tugtugan na” (it’s soundtripping time!) and “tugs”, a slang coined after the bass or pounding sound of dance music (tugs tugs tugs).

Radio Host DJ Mo Leaves ‘Willing Willie’ for Health Reasons

From PEP.ph

DJ Mo Twister, an announcer at Magic 89.9 DWTM Manila, is temporarily leaving from the primetime game show ‘Willing Willie’ as a segment host to attend to health reasons.

Mohan Gumatay, in real life, disclosed on TV5 Monday that his body needs to rest after showing sings of respiratory problems due to the rigorous hosting and announcing schedules he has.

“Kuya Wil kasi parang… Alam mo ‘pag nandito ko super, like, bigay talaga yung energy at yung voice at ‘pag umuuwi na ko sa gabi medyo nawawala na yung boses ko. Tapos may radio show pa ko na 6 AM at may gabi na radio show rin ako pagtapos ng ‘Willing Willie.’

“So parang sa radyo ‘pag paos yung boses mo, ang hirap din ‘no? So humihingi lang ako ng konting break para lang maka-recover na yung lungs ko. Sorry!” Mo explains to Willing Willie (WW) Host Willie Revillame. (quote from http://mb.com.ph/articles/303174/dj-mo-bows-out-willing-willie-now)

Aside from his 6 am morning show on Magic 89.9, DJ Mo is co-hosting Juicy, a celebrity gossip noon time show, and a late night radio podcast show after Willing Willie. He does all of these shows on a daily basis.

WW host Willie Revillame has no qualms with the DJ leaving the show for the moment. Replacement is yet to be announced.

It is pretty normal for radio DJs to be having a lot of jobs, especially because radio’s income not enough. But even for a decently earning DJ Mo, who probably can be likened as the Ryan Seacrest of the Philippines, he, and everyone else still needs rest.

Do you believe DJ Mo Twister’s leave on Willing Willie temporary or permanent?

Palawan Radio Anchor Killed, 2nd case under Aquino Admin

Dr. Gerry Ortega (left) and Palawan Mayor Edward Hagedorn (right) during a meeting

If proven to be work-related, the radio anchor in Palawan, who was shot point blank at a local market, will be the second case of media killings in the country under the Aquino administration and the 142nd journalist to be killed since democracy was restored in the country.

Here is a repost of an article by GMANews.tv

UPDATED 1:00 p.m. – Dr. Gerardo “Gerry” Ortega, a prominent civic leader and a former radio host of RGMA Network Inc., was shot and killed in Puerto Princesa City by a lone gunman on Monday morning.

Ortega, 47, was the main news anchor and commentator of Radyo Mo Nationwide’s (RMN)’s Palawan station dwAR at the time of the killing.

In a statement issued on Monday, the National Union of Journalists in the Philippines (NUJP) said, “Ortega is the 142nd journalist killed since 1986 when democracy was restored in the Philippine after Ferdinand Marcos was toppled.” “If the killing is proven to be work-related, he would be the second to be murdered under President Noynoy Aquino. The first was radio reporter Miguel Belen of Iriga, Camarines Sur,” the NUJP said.

James Viernes, radio anchor of RGMA, said the incident occurred at an “ukay-ukay” or used clothing store along the national highway in barangay San Pedro at around 9:30 a.m. Monday, shortly after the radio program of Ortega.

The suspect reportedly fled on foot but was soon caught by the police not far from the scene of the crime, Viernes said.

Viernes reported that the suspect, identified as Marvin Alcaraz of Taguig City in Metro Manila, claimed that he only intended to rob Ortega. A caliber-45 gun was recovered from the suspect, Viernes said.

Aside from his media work, Ortega is a well-known wildlife veterinarian and environmentalist popularly known as “Doc Gerry.” He was the director of the Crocodile Farming Institute, since renamed the Palawan Wildlife Rescue and Rehabilitation Center, from 1988 to 2000.

He served as board member in the Palawan provincial board from 2001 to 2004. He ran but lost in the 2004 gubernatorial race in the province. In the 2010 elections, he supported the failed gubernatorial bid of businessman Jose Alvarez.

Ortega was also active in church circles and was one of the local leaders of the Catholic group Couples for Christ in Palawan.

He has been involved in many advocacy campaigns including the anti-mining protests and the quest for an equitable share for Palawan from the Malampaya natural gas project.

Ortega was the project officer for Puerto Princesa of ABS-CBN Foundation’s community programs that included cave tours in Ugong Rock, firefly watching at Irawan river, as well as dolphin-watching and river tours in Palawan’s capital city.

The slain broadcaster is survived by his wife Patricia, also a veterinarian, four daughters and a son. — RSJ/VVP/YA, GMANews.TV
