Listen to RP1: Radyo Pilipinas Online of Philippine Broadcasting Service

RP1 or Radyo Pilipinas has just recently launched as the unified flagship AM station of the Philippine Broadcasting Services PBS. The network is under the supervision of the PCOO or Presidential Communications Operations Office.

In Metro Manila, the station is transmitting via 738khz on AM. The station uses the call letters DZRB.

The station monicker is the former name of DZRP. It was a shortwave broadcast service dedicated in serving the needs of Overseas Filipino Workers and Filipinos all over the globe.

Essentially, DZRP and DZRB have been merged. And all AM stations nationwide under PCOO will carry the RP1 Radyo Pilipinas brand.

GMA Radio welcomes new on air personality DJ Papa Bol.

He will be anchoring the recently vacated Wanted Sweetheart program formerly hosted by Papa Dan.

Benjur Evangelista in real life, Papa Bol hails from General Santos City and is a very popular DJ in their sister station Barangay 102.3FM.

Papa Bol is originally from Iloilo and as a former call center agent he speaks a few dialects (Tagalog, Bisaya, Ilonggo and Hiligaynon).

Benjur shared his radio story:

“For some reasons napunta ako sa Gen San. Nag-start ako dun as call center agent pero after six months or so, na-discover ko ang [Barangay LS] by accident lang yun eh, napadpad ako sa Barangay station, nag-apply tapos ‘yun everything started from there.”

“Nakakatakot, nakakakaba. Then ‘yung love sa radio came in, ‘yung parang nagagamay mo na ‘yung trabaho and I couldn’t see myself doing anything else kaya talagang parang meant to be,”

“Grabe ‘yung pressure. I mean una siyempre Papa Dan ‘di ba? So, you really have to step into the shoes or kung kaya, puwede mo pang higitan ang binibigay mo, gawin mo talaga. Be there para sa listeners at tulungan sila. Big responsibility at saka exciting kasi my family is here so ‘yung support nandyan. So I think, I’ll be able to do it kasi nandyan ‘yung love nung family.”

“They’re very happy and proud sila na ako ‘yung napili, tapos todo support. Talagang binaback-upan nila ako sa mangyayari and if I need help or kaya kung ano opinyon nila, I’ll always come back to them, kasi they are my family.”

“Yeah actually naisip ko yan. ‘Di mo kailangan sila i-outcast, kasi they have their own opinion, pero I want to love them pa rin. I will listen to them too and I will learn from them. By doing so, na pag-accept sa kanila, kahit ganun ‘yung iniisip nila, [I hope] they will learn to love me too.”

So confused this is anything but pop, its a ballad, and the two songs you are saying you miss from us are the MOST POP songs we have ever written… that stuff was over 4 years ago now, we have evolved

 and grown, its frustrating to read stuff like this… our music is so much more mature and just better now… 

if you cant live with us growing as artists and challenging ourselves and you just label us ‘pop’ cause youre not feeling it thats really lame. 

We never made promises to anyone that we would make the 128 bpm forever, we are gonna make we want to make and that will always change and you should be grateful for that because then in 5 years you wont ever be saying damn I wish alex and drew switched it up, cause we will always be making moves…. 

We love yall, and there are ballads, there is hard stuff, there is soft stuff, there is poppy stuff and there is dark stuff on this album… youre gonna get your bangers and youre gonna get your late night cruise songs… 

and we no doubt will have the idiots who say oh this is too pop and oh it sounds like there other songs, but try and let us be the artists we want to grow into and stop asking us to travel back in time and be artists we simply arent anymore…

Love Radio Responds to MOR 101.9 As Number 1: “AYNO!!”

“AYNO!” which sounds like “I know!” is the latest catchphrase now on Love Radio 90.7, a station known for their high recall on air slogans like “Kailangan pa bang i-memorize yan” and “Bisyo na to!”.

AYNO is actually an abbreviation of Always Your Number One!

Which is by the way, the official strapline used for their sung jingles produced by the modern-version-of-JAM-Creative-Productions jingle company ReelWorld.

In fact, Love Radio is holding a series of concerts dubbed the AYNO Concert Series.

AYNO is double-meaning catchphrase though, as in addition to mean sarcastically “I know”, it could also be a strong opposing response to other station’s claim of being number one, as in “AY NO!”.

Very clever!

While we still believe 93.9 iFM of RMN remains to be the most technically and sonically creative and best sounding in terms of on air radio branding, Love Radio is simply out of the box, in your face and truly pang masa-relevant on air imaging.

DJ Jhaiho of MOR 101.9 Manila revealed details of the recent survey that DWRR remains to be the number FM radio in the Philippines.

The radio personality, who is also a TV and events host said that since they rebranded to MOR they have consistently rated as number one.

DWRR has had many re-brandings in the past, the most recent of which was Tambayan 101.9.

DWRR led the survey, followed by Love Radio, DWRK, IFM, DWYS, DWKY, DWSM, DWFM and DWNU.

dwbr-1043-fm2 DWBR (104.3 FM), is now branded as FM2, it is an FM station utilizing a programming design in light of Classic Hits or music from the 80s and 90s in the Metro Manila market, asserted and worked by the assembly of the Philippines through the Philippine Broadcasting Service (PBS) under the Presidential Communications Group.

It begins communicating from the fourth Floor, Philippine Information Agency Building, Visayas Avenue, Quezon City. Airs daily from 6 am to 12 mn

In January 2017, PBS reported that Business Radio will change its name to FM2, successful February 2, 2017. Preceding this declaration, Rizal “Bong” Aportadera, Jr. (Sonny B) was delegated by PCO Sec. Martin Andanar as the Director of PBS in July 2016. After a month, Carlo Villo (Carlo José) was then selected by Aportadera as the organization’s appointee executive and leader of the new FM division.

On January 15, 2017, Business Radio unobtrusively closed down for the last time and went off the air for seven days because of specialized modification. On January 24, 2017, the station started hindering, playing exemplary hits alongside pre-recorded stingers conveying the slogan The New Republic. Sonny B, Carlo José and George Boone boarded 3 days after its test communicate. Boone, The Bug (Bob Novales) and Jun Sta. Ana were the backbones of the old DWBR.

On February 2, 2017, past 5:30am, DWBR marked on as FM2. Around then, it amplified its communicate time by two hours, broadcasting until 12:00 midnight.

The Rise and Proliferation of Hybrid News and Music Radio Format, Why Some Are Successful and Others Fail

2016 saw more success of the hybrid music and news format. You know those stations that are half newstalk and half music stations.

Brigada Networks particularly in Cebu, Philippines are now dominating the airwaves as it ranked higher in recent radio survey.

Last year was also the soft launch of Radyo Bisdak DXWO Pagadian City, which used to be Power 99 FM.

In fact, they still are using the Power 99 FM branding. Since this is what listeners are used to and even advertisers. Dropping that signature station logo will mean also dropping their most beloved and well known brand the listeners in Pagadian have been accustomed to for 30 years.

In San Carlos City, Power 95 FM is now called Kumbati News. However they still use the visual and sonic logo Power 95 FM.

Muews Radio 97.5 Iligan City is also doing well.

Unfortunately, there is one exception. 105.9 Balita FM closed shop last year.

See, there lies the problem.

By the way, 92.3 News FM in Manila does not fall into this category. News FM is an entirely newstalk format that broadcasts in FM band.

Now back to why some hybrid news music format flourish and some fail.

This format though is not new. In the provinces, low power stations thrive by combining a newstalk stations into the FM stations since operating 2 separate stations for each AM and FM band would be cost prohibitive.

Radyo Natin by MBC is one such network.

 

1.) Brand Popularity – some radio stations like DXWO Radyo Bisdak have been around for a long time. In Pagadian, where there are almost 10 FM stations and a handful of AM stations, people still prefer the station. Right now, the 99.9 FM band have been franchised to a new owner.

After the death of radio patriarch Alex Sy, the former owner of DXWO FM, the station has been performing ill in terms of sales.

Even if there were national advertisers, and they had a network of stations under Times Broadcasting Network Corporation, still the station had to be rescued.

So, it was bought a group and under the Bisdak network, which also operates in Dipolog. They also used bought DXWO’s sister station there.

With a new owner, a new investor, DXWO continues airing. They transferred their transmitter to a hill to increase coverage, with this new format and powerful transmission they are in direct competition to DXCA, a station owned by a political family in Zamboanga del Sur. That leads us to number 2.

 

2.) Political Backup – in order for a hybrid news and music format to remain on the air, you have to be owned by a political family. Such is the case of DXCA Bell FM. The arch enemy of DXWO.

Since, it’s inception, DXCA has been airing a news program from 5 am to 8 am. Then from 8 am until 12 midnight sign off, they go music.

 

Being owned by a political dynasty, DXCA literally is untouchable in ZDS. They never ran out of advertisers, of course, as a business owner in the region, you’d like be friends with the reigning politicos.

 

But whether they have strong sales or not, these political family owned radio stations will thrive, as long as they are still in power.

 

 

3.) Advertiser-Owned – such is the case of the Brigada Network. They are very much flourishing in Mindanao and in Cebu.

The secret? Well, their stations’ primary advertiser is the owner of the network.

See, Brigada was founded by a businessman who sells food supplements and liniments. He used to be a broadcaster too and paid radio stations across Mindanao and the Visayas to sell his products.

Knowing the ropes of the industry and feeling that his money just goes to the radio stations, he decided to buy and built stations, so he doesn’t have to pay other stations.

If you listen to Brigada stations, you will notice that most of its advertisements are for a food supplement and liniment products.

So even if they don’t sell much airtime, the station is already selling products for a living.

4.) Network Affiliation – if you don’t belong to a network, you are on your own.

The past few years have been tough for some stations in Mindanao.

 

DXDD although not a hybrid news music format has been struggling in their finances. The good thing is they are part of the CMN or Catholic Media Network, a network of stations owned by parishes or priests or Catholic organizations.

It’s common sense, even if one is an independent station. The station manager or owner should have its station be adopted by a network.

Advertisements are of course the lifeblood of radio stations unless you are government owned.

The very reason why these cross format stations now are thriving is because national or network owned stations have become cost prohibitive for local businesses.

The rates have gone up. So instead entrepreneurs are looking for cheaper ways to advertise their products.

Not everyone though is fond of the programming, especially those who raise their eyebrows on the bakya or pang-masa sound.

But overall, it is a tolerable format, a big hit for listeners in the countryside, the taxi and jeepney drivers and the senior citizens.
There’s a bright future ahead of these stations. Not to be left behind, they now embrace social media with some streaming on Facebook Live.

They now cater to a more listeners, not necessarily a broader slice of the economic segment but their core listeners who now work abroad as OFWs.

These OFWs want to listen to a radio station that keeps them abreast of local news from the province they came from.

While some stations fail, the hybrid news and music format will continue to thrive.
