The Future of HD Radio In The Philippines

Pioneering HD Radio in the Philippines

The very first FM station to operate via HD Radio (HD-R) in the Philippines began digitally broadcasting on November 9, in 2005. iFM 93.9 DWKC FM of Radio Mindanao Network (RMN) pioneered the use of the said new radio technology.

The country’s National Telecommunications Commission (NTC) are still finalizing its regulations for digital FM radio operations. Despite this, several Manila-based stations have already committed to roll out the technology.

Network owners are ready to shell out money indeed, but it’s clear that the market is yet to be ready.

HD-R receivers come at a hefty price (around US$100 to $150 or PHP 4000 to PHP 6000).

This is why radio Continue reading The Future of HD Radio In The Philippines

Importance of High Production Value on Your Radio Station

High Production value: James Bond Movies

In Hollywood, the quality of a movie is mostly referred to as the “production value.”

Basically, those films with bigger budgets tend to have higher production value because huge amount of money is being put on resources like the setting and special effects.

Why Production Value?

It is the aim of a film maker (depending on the genre though) to make the movie appear epic, attractive, realistic, relevant, stylish and expensive looking. This is what makes movie goers “go” to see a movie.

A James Bond movie is an example of a high production value flick, not just because of the protagonist’s cool gadgets, but also because of its expensive cars and its remote and exotic locations.

96.3 WRock Cebu Continuous To Dominate

96.3 WRock Cebu

The departure of the original 96.3 WRock in Metro Manila did not put out the fire of WRock’s sister station in Cebu. Legally known as DYRK FM, it is the only surviving call sign that carries the legendary AC brand.

96.3 WRock was the premiere choice for light rock and easy listening in Metro Manila since 1988 until it was bought by Manila Broadcasting Company (MBC) in 2008 and turned it into 96.3 Easy Rock.

Network owner ACWS – United Broadcasting Network brought WRock as an internet radio but eventually closed down in 2010 along with its sister stations in Davao and Bacolod. Continue reading 96.3 WRock Cebu Continuous To Dominate

106.7 Dream FM Goes Pure Online at PinoyTuner.com

Dream FM Becomes 'JAZZistas'

Dream FM listeners and Jazz music fans cannot believe they will be missing one more Jazz radio station in Manila FM band.

XFM 92.3 was a jazz station but was closed. Until now, there were only two Jazz stations left: Crossover 105.1 and 106.7 Dream FM. When July 1st comes, there will be one Jazz station left and more masa station added in the already crowded radio spectrum (as Energy FM takes over 106.7).

Fans suggest that Dream FM take on the 105.9 dial point. UR FaceRadio is said to vacate the slot by the end of this month.

Avid Jazzista Anthony Frank Tan, however, consoled listeners by directing them into an all-jazz online radio station via PinoyTuner.com. The station is branded as JAZZistas. It will not be carrying the Dream FM branding, but the “stationality” promises to bring the sound of the soon-to-be defunct radio to world-wide audience. Listen to 106.7 Energy FM, Is Cathy G Really Missing?

Energy FM on Dream 106.7

Energy FM on Dream 106.7 is just 2 days away, but the latest buzz is more than just that. Cathy G, its afternoon DJ is missing!

And they are scrambling to find her, so she can be on their July 1st launching. Is she really missing or is this a publicity stunt, if it’s a joke, not really a good joke, but if it is, you be the judge.

It’s official, that Energy FM is on 106.7. But they are not dropping the brand “Dream”. In fact, it’s on their graphics.

We believe this might be a temporary move, so as to remind or re-orient, so to speak, listeners that their Dream 106.7 is no longer a jazz station. Remember 91.5 Big Radio, is also doing this, with plugs that go “And dating Energy, big time na (the former Energy, now goes big time!)”.

But going back to the Cathy G thing, a YouTube was in fact uploaded. And even had Program Director Gio Mendez say they had to report it to the authorities.

So is Cathy G missing? Is this a gimmick?

DWTM’s Production Manager Carlo Jose Says Quit Radio School

DWTM FM Magic 89.9

If you want to be on the radio, stop learning radio in school. This was the advice of Carlo Jose, Production Manager at the famous Magic 89.9, DWTM FM of Quest Broadcasting Inc. during last month’s Kidlat Awards 2011.

I remember when I just 16, a budding DJ wannabe, who would do anything just to be heard on the radio. I did not know what was in radio, that I got hooked to it, sure it was about getting the hippest music and getting it first, the popularity and the chicks, but I did not realize that until I got IN radio.

Before my radio days, I was just a listener. I did not enjoy all the perks until my first boardwork.

So I believe being on radio is written in your DNA, you don’t go to school to be an announcer. And I remember this was also the very same thing that the late and former mentor of mine, Mr. Alex Sy of Times Broadcasting Network.
