18 Truths About Drastic Changes on Mainstream Radio

DJ Mo: "English Stations Will Not DIE"

No, radio is not yet dead in the Philippines. But in the past years, we’ve seen drastic changes on programming and branding. Is this for good, for better or for worse? Here are some truths about these changes?

1. Stations flip to “masa” formats because it’s where most listeners are
2. High end and niche stations (e.g. NU 107) sign off because niche listenership declines
3. Class A-B audience now has internet radio, iPods, and other on-demand media for music
4. Advertisers pay more on “masa” stations because it’s where most listeners are
5. Most radio listeners prefer “masa” stations for their entertainment value
6. Most radio listeners prefer “masa” stations for MORE popular songs
7. Most radio listeners prefer “masa” stations for their use of Filipino/local dialect
8. Most “masa” format flips reasoned that they only want to extend their demos, truth is, they MORE money.
9. More “masa” flipping stations in the country means less Top 40 stations
10. Which translates to slimmer airplay for niche musicians and artists
11. This also means recording companies will have to hire and record more “masa” appealing singers and bands.
12. More “masa” stations mean less English-speaking radio stations.
13. “Masa” stations are actually more of “talk-based” programming
14. With more “talk-based” programs on masa stations, listeners will now start seeking for alternative all-music programs.
15. There’s a significant number of FM listeners tuning in via cellphone, which means FM is a part of their daily lifestyle
16. Which means, listeners need news on FM while riding jeepney going to work/school
17. This means, listeners need music on their background and not just talk while at work
18. There are still a significant number of niche radio listeners, it’s just that radio stations aren’t doing something to keep them.

There might be more truths about the exodus of radio stations to the Masa format, but we get the point. Just because this “barriotic” formats are what most listeners want, doesn’t mean you have to slam it on their face and give them loads of it. Nobody wants to have sardines as their breakfast everyday of the year.

We just hope stations give listeners variety. In an article posted online, DJ Mo is Magic 89.9 expressed his thoughts on the current radio scene. He sees that while masa stations are flourishing, English-speaking radio stations will continue to exist.

“It is like music. Just because a Filipino singer like Jovit Baldivino is popular, [that does not mean] all singers will be like him. Of course rock will exists, there will still be bands. There is Korean-Pop. We all thrive on variety, and radio is just like that,” Mo Twister told BusinessWorld.

92.3 News FM

Radyo5 92.3 News FM is DWFM, a Nation Broadcasting Corporation (NBC) flagship station. NBC partnered with TV5 Philippines in re-branding the then Top40 station into the first NewsTalk radio on Manila’s FM band.

DWFM first aired in 1963 as a music station. In 1975, it started to carry the MRS or Most Requested Song moniker. In 2001, when RNB music became popular, DWFM became Joey @ Rhythms 92.3. The rest of the NBC stations in the country also followed suit, with provincial stations carrying names like Jessie and Danny.

In 2007, the station moved to the house dance format under the brand “XFM”. In 2009, it went back to CHR, “U92”. And the following year, it became Radyo 5 News FM.

Prior to the start of the new programming on DWFM last November 8, the final song played was Last Dance by Donna Summer. The first show aired by the new station was “Andar ng nga Balita” hosted by Martin Andanar. As of now, News FM shares facilities with its sister station 106.7 Dream FM. Radyo5 has plans to broadcast nationwide via its provincial AM and FM relay stations.

Just this February 21, 2011, in the tradition of simulcasting radio broadcasts on TV, select programs of 92.3 News FM are being broadcast on AksyonTV, an all news channel by TV5.

Blazin100.com First Filipino-owned Internet-based Top 40 Station on iTunes Radio

Blazin100.com First Filipino-operated Internet-based Top 40 Station Featured on iTunes Radio (that is broadcasting from the Philippines and not abroad)

It’s a feather in the cap for Blazin100.com to have their station featured on the iTunes Radio list. And they’re even more proud that they are the first Filipino-operated Top 40 internet-based (not FM) station (that is broadcasting from the Philippines and not abroad) that is on the list.

So what is iTunes Radio? It’s a list of internet radio stations from different countries. You can find this list by downloading the iTunes 10 software that is totally free. On the left panel, under the Library section, you see a “Radio” tab.

The stations are categorized by genre like Rock, Classic, Reggae and Top 40 or stations that play current hits.

Applying for iTunes Radio wasn’t easy. A team from the Apple-owned entity reviews the station based on a set of criteria. And the station must pass the strict streaming quality requirement. Because of Blazin100.com’s high quality sound, the station made it to the list.

For Filipinos here or abroad who love the Top 40 sound of a Philippine broadcaster, they now have more options to listen to Blazin100.com, aside from its on-site Adobe Flash radio player.

Blazin 100 is also available on Nokia Internet Radio directory, Internet-Radio.org.uk, Audiorealm.com, Shoutcast.com, and soon more listening options for Real Audio, Winamp, and Windows Media Player.

10 Reasons Why Filipinos Listen To Internet Radio

Why Internet Radio is Becoming Popular?

The internet radio scene in the country is not that bullish yet but judging from the growing list of stations, businesses and listeners are definitely considering streaming radio as part of modern Filipinos’ media consumption. Here are the 10 reasons.

1. Commercial-free music – listeners prefer tuning in to internet radio than to the traditional radio for the absence of commercials. Stations like Blazin100.com and AtlantisRadio.net don’t air many or no commercials.

Businesses and even internet cafes go for these commercial-free web stations because they are suitable as in-store radio. Most establishments hesitate to re-lay traditional radio broadcasts onto their customers because they don’t want to air commercials that may come from competitors.

2. Niche programming – the traditional radio spectrum offers basically the same type of formats, “masa” (Hot AC), Top 40. The present list of Philippine internet radio stations, however, offers a variety of programming that over-the-air broadcasts do not.

On the web, you can listen to stations that play Classical Filipino, OPM rock, rap, and Gospel music to name a few.

3. Local Appeal – internet radio stations are popular among OFWs or overseas Filipino Workers due to lack of programming in their area that appeal to them. Stations that cater to this crowd are usually operated by OFWs.

Programming may include talk shows that offer advice such as the Buhay OFW show on Cyber Pinoy Radio (www.cyberpinoyradio.net).

4. Nostalgia – every one has grown up listening to a certain station that is why online stations such as Y101 FM Cebu are a click to listeners abroad. Most of the original programs and DJs on the station are still around after the Cebu-based station first opened in the 80s.

Defunct stations like WRock Manila, Max FM and Campus Radio have already gone online.

But it’s not only the nostalgic station name that most listeners are after of, it’s also the music nostalgia. Due to corporate and ratings pressures, traditional stations may no longer be playing songs that have once topped the charts but unfortunately do not fit the current ratings-hungry programming of most terrestrial stations.

Internet radio programmers have more creative and programming control because they don’t have to worry about ratings, this means, more music variety for listeners.

5. Multi and Social Media Enhanced Interactivity – compared to the conventional radio, internet radio stations are more listener-engaging. With station websites integrating social media like Facebook and Twitter, the audience can participate in discussions through chat widgets and discussion boards. A listener may also participate as a co-host using video streaming services like Stickam, Ustream or Livestream.

6. New Music/Artists Discovery – nowadays, artists and bands have more chances of exposure than before. Most internet radio stations are willing to play unsigned artists that are fit for their format. Blazin100.com recently included Wizhfulltinkers, Shuffled, and Bethany onto their playlist.

Blazin100.com does not accept payment in order to feature an independent artist. Most traditional stations would require monetary means just so a band can have their song played on air. This does not only help save artists money, but it’s also a big help to the local music industry.

7. Aggregated Information – internet radio stations now deliver and relay information in a multitude of ways. For instance, internet stations display the title of the songs on their website, a feature not available on traditional radio.

They are also able to distribute relevant and real time news through social media.

8. Innovation – the internet has so much to offer, it will not be long before every household in the country will be hooked. The internet has also gone more mobile than ever before. And every internet radio website will be there to improve as the internet revolution continues.

9. Listener-engaging playlist – because web stations are more listener-focused, their programming is more influenced on what listeners like to hear.

The integration of request boxes and even instant request airplays, give audiences more power on the playlist.

10. Talk-free programming – while online radio stations carry the same programming they have over the air, internet-based stations have lesser talks and fewer interruptions. Unless, it’s a talk format, internet stations have more songs covered in an hour, usually 12 to 13, than the 8 or 9 songs heard on FM radio.

Barangay LS 97.1 Goes “Tugstugan Na”

GMA Network’s flagship FM station DWLS FM 97.1 sports a new strapline “Tugstugan Na” in response to tightening competition among local “masa” (Hot AC) stations in Metro Manila, Philippines.

Visit official website at www gmanetwork com

This new branding hopes to further reinforce DWLS’ commitment to be the leading FM radio choice of Metro Manila listeners. In an interview via 24 Oras earlier tonight, the DJs of the station expressed that the new branding will bring in more fun and music entertainment while retaining its talk-based programs like Barangay Love Story.

With the new slogan “Tugstugan Na!”, is the station now leaning to a more rhythmic programming? The catchphrase is a play of the terms “tugtugan na” (it’s soundtripping time!) and “tugs”, a slang coined after the bass or pounding sound of dance music (tugs tugs tugs).
