With the slogan “We Get The Hits First”, the 2008 KBP Gold Dove Awardee for Best Station, lets you discover new music and unsigned artists in a variety of ways. The Radio Station Business Model and Survival in the new Decade

For so many years radio was the most popular means of entertainment. It was first of all free; then later it became portable, then becoming interactive thus making it easy for listeners to ask for what they wanted to hear.

Radio stations did not charge listeners for the entertainment, normal radio stations still don’t; and for so long the radio station business was pretty much the same simple model.. providing entertaining programming to its listeners, selling advertising spots enough to cover operating costs and make a profit.

Advancements in technology over the past few decades however have shrunk it’s popularity, rendering it less relevant to a majority of its once loyal audience, consequently limiting the amount of revenue to be made through advertising spots. The dawn of the digital and portable age of music was the also the start of the demise of the traditional radio business model.

DWFM 92.3 For Rent?! Anyone?

U92 FM - Is Metro Manila's New Sound
U92 FM - Is Metro Manila's New Sound

Losing profits due to declining sales, a well known mall back in my place decided to rent the entire third floor. Within a few months, the third loft looked like a “tiyangge”. Not a bad idea. People start to swarm back to the mall.

After Joey @ 92.3 and XFM, (oh did I mention MRS?) the 92.3 dial point has just gotten another facelift. Introducing — U92. The format — Hot AC. Owner: still NBC, but it’s not them managing the programming.

The U92 format is handled by Francis Lumen, president of All Youth Networks, which covers MTV Philippines. Lumen was a president of NBC and also a blocktimer. When NBC realized they couldn’t make any more profits, they lifted the XFM format and handed over the entire programming task to the AYC President.

Lumen is basically renting the whole DWFM airtime*. The question is will this really bring more profit to NBC?

AYC is a solid company. You got solid names in the industry jocking the station (KC, Marc Abaya among others). Running MTV Philippines means a captured market and competitive edge. No doubt it can generate that much needed revenue.

But like pop music, new brands have the tendency to become disposable. While it’s still hot, they had to make the most out of it. If U92 will become as solid as the MTV brand, they could last for a number of years. If it won’t? Well, NBC can still look for another tenant to do the programming for them. And Francis Lumen won’t have to worry about losing profits.

The mall did get a positive bottom line for a while. Poor owners, the solution they thought later gave them more headache. Their tenants became the owner’s competitors. Shoppers went for the tiyangge’s. Movie watchers preferred the DVDs than going to cineplexes.

Congratulations though to U92. Bring on the love! Cool to be U! Listen to U92 FM Online at www.u92.fm

7 Things I Hate That Most Radio Stations Don’t Do

7 Radio Habits
7 Radio Habits

To copy from a Dan O’day Blog, there are 7 things radio stations should habitually. When I say habitual, it should be definitely done regularly. The problem with radio stations these days, they only do promos, hype their programming during survey seasons. Tsk tsk tsk

From: http://danoday.com/blog/2009/08/mike-mcvay-radio-programming/

1. NEWS & INFORMATION IN THE MORNINGS Winning radio stations present informative news reports and have community information so listeners can plan their lives. The most successful of these radio stations present news that, were it in print, would mirror a local weekly small community newspaper.

2. PRESENCE AT COMMUNITY EVENTS Being everywhere, being seen by everyone, being involved with anything that matters to the community, attaching your name to those things the community cares about is extremely important.

3. FAVORITE MORNING SHOW How often do people change their radios in morning drive? They all do it in the car, but seldom do they change the clock radio in their bedroom.

4. BEING FUN TO LISTEN TO The person working in a steel mill considers your air talents’ job (being paid to play music and talk) as anything but work. Encourage your on-air talent to sound as though they’re having fun.

5. BEST FOR LISTENING AT-WORK Successful music stations have a product that is compatible with at-work listening locations. You MUST be a “Listen While You Work” radio station to be successful.

6. MOST CONTESTS We’ve all seen studies that indicate only 5% to 10% of the audience plays contests. But the most successful stations have contests and games on the air. Radio stations that win … play games.

7. HERITAGE/LENGTH OF TIME IN FORMAT/CONNECTION TO THE MUSIC A radio station that brands one name with the type of music it plays and doesn’t keep changing will have the greatest opportunity for success. Find something that works …. And stick with it.
