If proven to be work-related, the radio anchor in Palawan, who was shot point blank at a local market, will be the second case of media killings in the country under the Aquino administration and the 142nd journalist to be killed since democracy was restored in the country.

Here is a repost of an article by GMANews.tv

UPDATED 1:00 p.m. – Dr. Gerardo “Gerry” Ortega, a prominent civic leader and a former radio host of RGMA Network Inc., was shot and killed in Puerto Princesa City by a lone gunman on Monday morning.

Ortega, 47, was the main news anchor and commentator of Radyo Mo Nationwide’s (RMN)’s Palawan station dwAR at the time of the killing.

In a statement issued on Monday, the National Union of Journalists in the Philippines (NUJP) said, “Ortega is the 142nd journalist killed since 1986 when democracy was restored in the Philippine after Ferdinand Marcos was toppled.” “If the killing is proven to be work-related, he would be the second to be murdered under President Noynoy Aquino. The first was radio reporter Miguel Belen of Iriga, Camarines Sur,” the NUJP said.

James Viernes, radio anchor of RGMA, said the incident occurred at an “ukay-ukay” or used clothing store along the national highway in barangay San Pedro at around 9:30 a.m. Monday, shortly after the radio program of Ortega.

The suspect reportedly fled on foot but was soon caught by the police not far from the scene of the crime, Viernes said.

Viernes reported that the suspect, identified as Marvin Alcaraz of Taguig City in Metro Manila, claimed that he only intended to rob Ortega. A caliber-45 gun was recovered from the suspect, Viernes said.

Aside from his media work, Ortega is a well-known wildlife veterinarian and environmentalist popularly known as “Doc Gerry.” He was the director of the Crocodile Farming Institute, since renamed the Palawan Wildlife Rescue and Rehabilitation Center, from 1988 to 2000.

He served as board member in the Palawan provincial board from 2001 to 2004. He ran but lost in the 2004 gubernatorial race in the province. In the 2010 elections, he supported the failed gubernatorial bid of businessman Jose Alvarez.

Ortega was also active in church circles and was one of the local leaders of the Catholic group Couples for Christ in Palawan.

He has been involved in many advocacy campaigns including the anti-mining protests and the quest for an equitable share for Palawan from the Malampaya natural gas project.

Ortega was the project officer for Puerto Princesa of ABS-CBN Foundation’s community programs that included cave tours in Ugong Rock, firefly watching at Irawan river, as well as dolphin-watching and river tours in Palawan’s capital city.

The slain broadcaster is survived by his wife Patricia, also a veterinarian, four daughters and a son. — RSJ/VVP/YA, GMANews.TV

How Radio Bug Gives Homeless DJ A Second Chance

Homeless But Not Voiceless

In the radio industry, phrases like “once a radio announcer always a radio announcer”, or “been bitten by radio bug” are common. And it’s true for a jobless man in Columbus named Ted Williams whose popularity stemmed from being featured on YouTube. He now finds a second shot at radio and voice over after living in the streets being drunk and a drug abuser.

A local newspaper reporter discovered him with a placard partly saying “I have a God given gift of voice”. The reporter “YouTubed” a video of Williams in January 3 hoping to get support from viewers. Sympathy poured in and 2 days he got interviewed at WNCI FM.

Williams told he used to work at a Jazz radio station when alcohol and drugs took his career and was living homeless for years. By holding a sign card, he hoped to get a job in radio again. And sure he did. His placard did not just grant plenty of radio job offerings, but a share under the celebrity spotlight as well.

He was offered the following:

– THE BO RADIO SHOW Stint in Pennsylvania – offering a minimum wage starting salary.
– NBA announcer for The Cleveland Cavaliers — including a salary and a house.
– Ohio Credit Union League offered $10,000 cash and a retainer deal for voicework.
– ESPN is reportedly offering him a job.
– MTV reportedly wants to discuss a reality series.
– A free vacation trip to HILO, HI to voice a commercial.
– A spot on America’s Next Voice, a reality show for discovering new voice talents.
– And numerous guestings and interviews.

I have also known a lot of people in the business who have shifted away from radio. But the “radio bug” as we call it remains. And wherever life may radio announcers to, they will always go back to radio.

BEHRINGER Philippines Runs for Benefit

BEHRINGER, the world’s leading provider of audio equipment, joins a benefit marathon organized by Pilipino Star Ngayon to aid school rebuilding damaged by 2009 typhoons. 20 plus staff of Behringer Manila Office sprinted 3K, 4K, and 10K.

This is a breath of fresh air for us Filipinos, who are now sick of hearing unsettled disputes from the recent elections. The race for government seats is over, now we must race for another marathon here, a run to unite the country, heal the wounds, and rebuild the nation.

First Vote Goes to Manny Villar

Villar, Legarda, Ocampo and Masa Picked By First Automated Elections Voter

In this historical absentee voting taking place starting today for OFWs in Hong Kong, Rowena Dela Cruz, the first Filipino in line to feed her ballot on the PCOS machine, reveals she gives her vote to Nationalista standard bearer Manny Villar as reported in today’s radio program with Noli De Castro on DZMM.

Report further states the first “Philippine automated election” voter voted for Loren Legarda as her vice presidential bet and shaded only two names in the senatorial list, the names of which were Satur Ocampo and Lisa Masa.

Ms Dela Cruz has this very rare opportunity to be the first Filipino to vote in the first automated election. She is a Filipino and she works in Hong Kong. But instead of her coming home to vote, the election comes to her.

That’s how important our vote is. Makes me even more convinced that I should go home this May 10, 2010 to cast my vote, even if it means in my part, spending money, taking effort, and risking my life in a notoriously hostile place for elections. I am leaving for Mindanao to vote.

DWFM 92.3 For Rent?! Anyone?

U92 FM - Is Metro Manila's New Sound
U92 FM - Is Metro Manila's New Sound

Losing profits due to declining sales, a well known mall back in my place decided to rent the entire third floor. Within a few months, the third loft looked like a “tiyangge”. Not a bad idea. People start to swarm back to the mall.

After Joey @ 92.3 and XFM, (oh did I mention MRS?) the 92.3 dial point has just gotten another facelift. Introducing — U92. The format — Hot AC. Owner: still NBC, but it’s not them managing the programming.

The U92 format is handled by Francis Lumen, president of All Youth Networks, which covers MTV Philippines. Lumen was a president of NBC and also a blocktimer. When NBC realized they couldn’t make any more profits, they lifted the XFM format and handed over the entire programming task to the AYC President.

Lumen is basically renting the whole DWFM airtime*. The question is will this really bring more profit to NBC?

AYC is a solid company. You got solid names in the industry jocking the station (KC, Marc Abaya among others). Running MTV Philippines means a captured market and competitive edge. No doubt it can generate that much needed revenue.

But like pop music, new brands have the tendency to become disposable. While it’s still hot, they had to make the most out of it. If U92 will become as solid as the MTV brand, they could last for a number of years. If it won’t? Well, NBC can still look for another tenant to do the programming for them. And Francis Lumen won’t have to worry about losing profits.

The mall did get a positive bottom line for a while. Poor owners, the solution they thought later gave them more headache. Their tenants became the owner’s competitors. Shoppers went for the tiyangge’s. Movie watchers preferred the DVDs than going to cineplexes.

Congratulations though to U92. Bring on the love! Cool to be U! Listen to U92 FM Online at www.u92.fm

Radio DJ Tip: DJs Should Learn Txt Lingo

Radio DJ Tip: DJs Should Learn the Txt Lingo
Radio DJ Tip: DJs Should Learn the Txt Lingo

I tuned in once on iFM 93.9 Cebu. The morning show hosts were on their text greeting segment, when the male DJ complained about one text message that was abbreviated.

The DJ whined, “next time ayaw ninyo i-abbreviate ang inyo mga text kay lisod kaayo basahon. Ha, please next time, when you text please do not use abbreviated words, kay lisod basahon.” The DJ said this in a very unfriendly manner.

Translated: “next time, don’t abbreviate your text messages because they are difficult to read. Okay, please next time, when you text please do not use abbreviated words, because it’s difficult to read.”

As a DJ and a listener, I’ve also had similar experiences/encounters. DJs can request listeners/texters to send their messages in complete spelling. But the DJ delivered his words inappropriately, with a mad tone. And when a DJ whines up on the air over such trivial stuff, is just so unprofessional.

Here’s the problem: DJs ask listeners to text them their greetings, requests and what nots. And when their listeners send in their texts, DJs grumble?!

Here are some tips for DJs:
1. If a txt msg is hard to decipher or is just inappropriate to read on the air, the DJ should better not read it.
2. The DJ should politely and friendly request his listeners to send their text messages in complete spelling, otherwise abbreviated but still legible.
3. I suggest the DJ should start embracing the generation txt lingo. He should learn to adapt the ways of his listeners. That’s what a radio station should really be, a reflection of the culture of its listeners.
4. And yes, please Mr. DJ, read first your text messages off the air, before airing them. I find it very awkward to listen to DJs who sound dyslexic reading text messages.

“Ang sagwa pakinggan ng mga DJs na nagkakabulol-bulol, tapos parang kung misan, sinasadya pang paputol putol yung pagbasa ng text, para kunwari mahirap talaga basahin yung text.”

For heaven’s sake, if you are not used to reading text messages, please do your homework. Rehearse it, before airing. Let’s make radio a better medium, okay?

Wave 89.1 FM – Manila’s Influential RNB Station

Wave 89.1’s 2009 TV Ad was released earlier this year, blasting off its new format as an R&B station. I also noticed that other stations under the Quest wing are also starting to get its own identity, which is great, so as not to overpopulate the Manila airwaves with too many CHR-ish stations.

Max FM 103.5 is now more rhythmic CHR leaning. 99.5 RT is trying to become a pang-masa TOP 40 station. Jam 88.3 is strictly Modern AC. My hats off to the Quest group! 2 more formats though are missing, an alternative AC format, like the defunct K-Lite, should be brought again in the Manila airwaves. And, a CCM station would be a great addition!
