The advertising revenue for internet radio increased 21% in 2011 against revenues in 2010. This, according to a new report by the IAB or Interactive Advertising Bureau. But which internet radio content do advertisers pour in most of their money?
The IAB data mentioned Edison Research and Arbitron as sources for its report and revealed that 89 million web users have been tuning in to internet radio.
A bulk of the advertising spending came from the major businesses such as automakers, restaurants and retailers.
Mobile online radio listening has now become an increasing trend, says IAB, with 45% of listeners tuned in using smart phones.

MANILA — Gunmen shot dead the host of a political radio show in the Philippines, police said on Tuesday, the latest journalist to be killed in one of the world’s most dangerous countries for reporters.
Broadcaster Niel Jimena, 42, was riding his motorcycle in the central island of Negros on Monday when two men on another motorcycle shot him five times, said local police chief Leonardo Cobing.
“He noticed he was being followed, he tried to make a U-turn (to escape) but the two men continued to follow him until… one of them opened fire,” said Cobing.
The killing may be linked to Jimena’s twice-weekly show “Judge” on DYRI-RMN in Iloilo city on Negros where he regularly criticised the city mayor and other local officials, according to Cobing.
Singapore is also home to talented Filipino radio personalities, Super Mario and Harry Corro are our Kababayans, now making waves in the airwaves of the Lion City State.
Another media company, MediaCorp, which runs 98FM Singapore is now looking for creative individuals to fill in 3 vacant positions.
MediaCorp has vacancies for the following positions:
– Art Director
– Copywriter
– Senior Producer, Radio NGNBN
Australia was successful in doing this in August 6, 2009. For the first time in the history of the radio industry in the Land Down Under, radio stations gather to promote the exodus of the radio industry here from analog to digital.
From Hype to Historical
The event created so much publicity, that the hype of having a digital radio turned into something historical.
HD Radio, without a doubt has some disadvantages: expensive receivers, costly conversion of digital equipment. But everyone knows about the benefits, and this is where policy makers, digital radio manufacturers, and radio networks should come together, to unite and tell the masses the advantages. The very first FM station to operate via HD Radio (HD-R) in the Philippines began digitally broadcasting on November 9, in 2005. iFM 93.9 DWKC FM of Radio Mindanao Network (RMN) pioneered the use of the said new radio technology.
The country’s National Telecommunications Commission (NTC) are still finalizing its regulations for digital FM radio operations. Despite this, several Manila-based stations have already committed to roll out the technology.
Network owners are ready to shell out money indeed, but it’s clear that the market is yet to be ready.
HD-R receivers come at a hefty price (around US$100 to $150 or PHP 4000 to PHP 6000).
Just four months after it first aired in November 9, 2010, 107.5 Win Radio Manila landed at number 7 according to the March 2011 KBP Radio Research Council survey.
107.5 Win Radio debuted last year following the closure of NU 107. The station is managed by CEO and Network Manager Daniel Razon and Manny Luzon who became the COO and EVP last October 10, 2010.
Luzon has been on 90.7 Love Radio since 1975 to 1991. He founded K-LOVE 1494 in 1991 and 91.5 Energy FM in 1996 under his own company, Ultrasonic Broadcasting System.
Smooth Jazz radio 106.7 Dream FM is reported to close shop come July 2011 to make way for Energy FM’s arrival from the 91.5 frequency.
Recently, a new radio station Big Radio occupied the dial point (91.5), which is owned by Manny Luzon of Ultrasonic Broadcasting System, the same company that operates Energy FM and all its sister station across the country.

Legally known as DWET FM, Dream FM is owned by TV5. TV5 also operates News FM 92.3, but the frequency is licensed to Nation Broadcasting Corporation (NBC).
Energy FM Exodus
Rumors have it that Energy FM will take over 106.7 in July. But this, yet, is to be confirmed. No official statement has been made by Ultrasonic Broadcasting System as of this post time, regarding the exact destination of Energy FM.
Today, June 1, 2011 91.5 Big Radio launches and replaced the former brand Energy FM. The latter station signed off a few minutes past midnight paving the way for the launching of the new brand.
Manny Luzon spearheads the new format. He is currently the president of OneRadio Management, who is also involved in managing and programming 107.5 Win Radio, along with Daniel Razon.
The format Big Radio sounds very much like Energy FM, which is rumored to transfer to the 106.7 frequency.
Big Radio is owned by Ultrasonic Broadcasting System which also operates all Energy FM stations in the country.
More Mobile Internet Radio Listeners Today Than in 2009
Audio Graphics and Borrell Associates recently conducted a survey among a group of people who are actively listening to internet radio. The survey showed an interesting rise of mobile internet radio listening.
Unlike other surveys, that are made by asking random people, the survey is part of an on-going study by the same group.
The respondents were asked this question: “if you own a hand held device, do you listen to internet radio on it?” The results below are impressive.
announced new content deals and a strategic development agreement with Pollack Media for its new “Digital Moms”- focused internet radio network, Athena365. Since its beta launch in mid November, Athena365 has attracted hundreds of thousands of women, generating thousands of registrants and Facebook likes. Athena365 music stations showcase styles from Pop to Jazz, and Athena talk stations, like Harpo Radio, feature celebrities such as Dr. Oz and Dr. Laura Berman.
Building on this early momentum, Live365 is now bringing a variety of successful bloggers and authors to Athena365. Planned featured stations include talk programming by Dr. Sagall of Pediatrics for Parents; Melinda Roberts, author of themommyblog.net and Mommy Confidential; and Dawn Friedman, an author published by The Huffington Post and Parenting.com. These partners will provide their unique insights on health, parenting, relationships, and other subjects of interest to the women served by Athena365.
“I wanted more ways to reach my audience. On-the-go Moms can’t read my blog while they’re driving. But they can listen to me on Athena365,” said Melinda Roberts. “It’s a great chance to adapt what I do to the lifestyle of my audience.”
“We have this list of people we think are just incredibly talented and brilliant. We have to get them on the air,” said Gary Lipkowitz, Director of Business Development at Live365. “We are explicitly promising Athena365 listeners a compelling stream of content that will both entertain and enrich their lives. This is the first step toward fulfilling that promise.”
The Athena365 team has also joined forces with veteran music experts and media consultants Pollack Media Group. The Pollack Media Team, led by Jeff Pollack and programmer Pat Welsh, is curating Live365’s extensive station roster for inclusion on Athena365. In addition, the Pollack Media team is working closely with Live365 to deliver new content and distribution partnerships.
“We couldn’t be more excited to be part of Athena365’s growth,” said Jeff Pollack. “We’ve been hearing positive feedback about Athena365 from prospective partners, and I’m confident that Athena365 listeners are going to see some big names coming their way.”
