The Current State of ABS-CBN Radio Stations in 2023

ABS-CBN Corporation, one of the largest media conglomerates in the Philippines, faced a major setback in 2020 when its congressional franchise to operate its television and radio stations expired and was denied renewal by the House of Representatives. The franchise renewal controversy was fueled by several issues, such as alleged violations of the constitution, labor and tax laws, and broadcast standards, as well as political interference and bias. President Rodrigo Duterte, who had repeatedly expressed his disdain for the network, called its franchise renewal bid a “piece of garbage” and claimed that it was already sold to a businessman¹.

The denial of the franchise renewal resulted in the shutdown of ABS-CBN’s 42 television stations, 10 digital broadcast channels, 18 FM stations, and 5 AM stations nationwide. The National Telecommunications Commission (NTC) issued a cease and desist order on May 5, 2020, effectively silencing the network’s broadcast operations. The NTC also issued two alias cease and desist orders on ABS-CBN TV Plus and Sky Direct, the network’s digital TV and satellite TV services, on June 30, 2020. The frequencies assigned to ABS-CBN were recalled by the NTC on September 10, 2020¹.

The shutdown of ABS-CBN’s radio stations affected millions of listeners who relied on them for news, information, entertainment, and public service. According to a survey conducted by Kantar Media in 2019, 62 percent of the respondents in the Philippines stated accessing media through radio or audio for the past 12 months². Radio is also the second most used and most trusted source of political information in the country. In 2013, roughly two-thirds of the country’s population listened to radio, with 41.4 percent listening at least once a week, according to the Philippine Statistics Authority³. Radio is also the most pervasive medium, reaching even the remotest areas of the country.

ABS-CBN’s radio stations were among the most popular and influential in the country. Its AM radio network, Radyo Patrol, consisted of 16 stations that delivered news, public affairs, public service, soap opera and talk shows. Its flagship station, DZMM 630, had a selected audience share of 24.9 percent in 2016, making it the top-rated AM station in Metro Manila⁴. Its FM radio network, MOR Philippines, consisted of 17 stations that played mostly music and entertainment programs. Its flagship station, MOR 101.9 For Life!, had a selected audience share of 34.1 percent in 2016, making it the top-rated FM station in Metro Manila⁴.

Despite the loss of its broadcast franchise, ABS-CBN did not give up on its mission to serve the Filipino people through various platforms. It resumed broadcasting through pay-TV Kapamilya Channel on June 13, 2020, and free-to-air A2Z (via ZOE TV) on October 10, 2020. It also partnered with former rival TV5 to simulcast some of its programs on January 24, 2021. It also continued to produce content for its online platforms such as iWantTFC (streaming service), Kapamilya Online Live (YouTube and Facebook), Kumu (social media app), Teleradyo (online radio), and ABS-CBN News (website).

As for its radio stations, ABS-CBN has not yet announced any plans to revive them or apply for a new franchise. However, some of its former radio personalities have found new homes in other radio networks or online platforms. For instance, some of the former Radyo Patrol anchors have joined Radyo Pilipinas (government-owned), Radyo Veritas (Catholic-owned), or Radyo Katipunan (Jesuit-owned). Some of the former MOR DJs have joined Barangay LS (GMA-owned), Wish FM (BMPI-owned), or Energy FM (Ultrasonic-owned). Some have also ventured into podcasting or vlogging to reach their loyal listeners.

The current state of ABS-CBN’s radio stations reflects the challenges and opportunities that the media industry faces in the changing media landscape and evolving radio listening habits. On one hand, radio faces competition from other forms of media such as television, internet, social media, streaming services, podcasts, and music apps that offer more choices and convenience to consumers. On the other hand, radio still has an edge over other media in terms of accessibility, affordability, reliability, and intimacy that can appeal to a wide and diverse audience.

The future of ABS-CBN’s radio stations remains uncertain at this point. However, one thing is clear: radio is not dead yet. It is still alive and kicking in the hearts and minds of millions of Filipinos who tune in every day for their dose of news, information, entertainment, and public service. Radio is still a vital part of the Filipino culture and identity. Radio is still for life.

GMA 7, Not Penalized for Hostage Coverage Violation

GMA 7

ABS-CBN, TV5 and Radio Mindanao Network are all asked by KBP to pay P30,000 for violating its rules on appropriate coverage.

According to its internal investigative panel, all 3 networks were found out to have crossed the line just to get a good scoop on the August 2010 Luneta hostage-taking crisis.

PCIJ or Philippine Center for Investigative Journalism however said that the penalty of P30,000 is very petty compared to the number of lives lost and risked, time lost in finger pointing, and damage to international relations and tourism.

KBP However did not impose a penalty on GMA 7 since it is not a member of the organization.

Can Other Stations Play ABS-CBN Christmas ID Songs?

ABS-CBN 2010 Christmas Station ID

With the increasing popularity of ABS-CBN’s Christmas Station IDs and its official theme songs, listeners are now pouring in radio air play requests of such hits as “Star Ng Pasko” and the new “Ngayong Pasko, Magniningning Ang Pilipino” (2010 Official Theme). The question is can competing radio networks play these songs?

ABS-CBN, the leading TV and radio network in the Philippines is known for its catchy and heartwarming Christmas Station IDs. “Star Ng Pasko” (Star Of Christmas) is among the most popular theme songs. This and other original compositions are produced by the network and performed by its own talents. The songs, although associated with the network, has generic lyrics that convey message of unity, hope, faith, love and family.

It’s definitely an issue of identity. The Christmas Station IDs will be aired hourly on all of ABS-CBN satellite TV and radio stations. And if a competition station plays any of the songs, that would indirectly identify ABS-CBN. And what kind of radio station would want to promote a rival network?

In the end, however, it’s the call of every listener-pleasing radio station whether or not they will play a song that is directly associated with a rival company.

TV Giants Gear Up for Philippine Elections Coverage, Augmented Reality Technology Debuts

War Room ABS-CBN Headquarters for their Election Coverage

The two Philippine TV Network mammoths, ABS-CBN and GMA have recently showed their latest facility and technology to be used for their coverage on the Philippine Elections come May 10, 2010.

Large LED and LCD screens, multi live feed and touch screen systems, new OB Vans, satellite transreceivers, video cameras, and even iPads, are among the latest tools that both networks boast.

The Kapamilya Network, during TV Patrol last Friday, showed televiewers a sneak peek to its ‘War Room’ — the command center for their election coverage.

GMA 7, on other hand, showed off their high end coverage set, beefed up by its partnership with PLDT and SMART Telecommunications.

In the midst of this sophisticated setting, both networks, for the first time in Philippine TV, will be using augmented reality technology or AR. AR enhances the real and live video feed with 3D graphics that seem to interact with the real environment. AR makes the 3D graphics to move around as the camera switches angles, making it look like the 3D images are physically present.

AR has been used by major TV networks in the US like CBS, ABC, NBC, and FOX. But the use of advanced tools and non-traditional methods in election coverage is said to have been benchmarked by CNN, when it introduced hologram in the 2008 US Elections.

Hologram is a technology that beams images of a remote video feed by using complex light and camera technology. This is however different since the news anchor actually sees the holograph (beamed image) as opposed to AR.

ABS-CBN promises that the use of this new technology will bring new perspective in news delivery.

“The main idea here is to make our viewers look at things at a new light. 75 percent of what they remember is going to be the video that they see. And if it is presented to them in a way that peaks their interest, they’ll remember it”, explains Maria Ressa, ABS-CBN News and Current Affairs Head.

Set for GMA Elections Coverage

GMA 7 also stressed that above using top of the line tools, factual, straightforward, and unbiased news delivery is still their top priority.

“Talaga namang pinaghandaan at pinagkagastuhan namin ito. But more than anything else, kagaya nang nakagawian natin sa mga nakalipas na election coverage, ihahatid natin ang pinakapatas at walang kinikilingang pagbabalita”, assures Atty. Felipe Gozon, CEO, GMA Network, Inc.

Radio networks from the two giant broadcast firms have also amped their coverage activities by adopting citizen journalism. While radio continues to use basic technology, radio stations across the country have found cell phones to be the only high tech gadget they can employ.

TV Networks may have invested hugely in state-of-the-art broadcast technology, but in the end it is still the content that matters.

Tamano: “Why, When ABS-CBN Favors Noynoy?”

“Bakit naman po ibibigay namin ang dokumento sa ABS-CBN na alam naman namin na bias o favor ang network kay Noynoy.”

“Bakit naman po ibibigay namin ang dokumento sa ABS-CBN na alam naman namin na bias o favor ang network kay Noynoy.” – Atty. Adel Tamano, Nationalista Spokesperson explains in a phone in DZMM interview this morning with Gerry Braja and Anthony Taberna following accusation that the Nationalista party supposedly made up and handed over the documents to ABS-CBN pertaining to Liberal Party Presidentiable Benigno “Noynoy” Aquino III having a history of “massive depressive disorder”, as a “black propaganda”.

Earlier in a report via ABS-CBNNews.com, Aquino stated that “What they’re doing is that they came up with this work of fiction”. Tamano, in the interview further reasoned that there is no way this black propaganda against Noynoy can benefit the Nationalista party.

Whatever the truth though, it is ugly to see and hear both parties, claiming to be opposition, throwing stones against each other. I am not surprised though when Tamano mentions the slanting of ABS-CBN toward Noynoy.

Anthony Taberna and Gerry Braja followed up Tamano’s statement saying that they respect his opinion. Tamano closed the interview thanking the two anchors for the fair opportunity given to them.

Although apparently the Lopez-run company leans in favor to Aquino, I still commend the company for its effort in maintaining credibility in its news and public affairs activities. I hope the people will appreciate their efforts.

Isang magandang Araw ng Kagitingan po sa inyo.
