The Radio Station Business Model and Survival in the new Decade

For so many years radio was the most popular means of entertainment. It was first of all free; then later it became portable, then becoming interactive thus making it easy for listeners to ask for what they wanted to hear.

Radio stations did not charge listeners for the entertainment, normal radio stations still don’t; and for so long the radio station business was pretty much the same simple model.. providing entertaining programming to its listeners, selling advertising spots enough to cover operating costs and make a profit.

Advancements in technology over the past few decades however have shrunk it’s popularity, rendering it less relevant to a majority of its once loyal audience, consequently limiting the amount of revenue to be made through advertising spots. The dawn of the digital and portable age of music was the also the start of the demise of the traditional radio business model.

The very first Philippine FM radio station I get to listen online was Y101 Cebu back in 2000-2001. I couldn’t remember well, but all I know was that during that time, iPhone was still a dream, and listening to a radio station via cellphone was only limited to analog broadcasts.

Fast forward to present, and remaining true to its claim to fame “Always First”, Y101 Cebu embraces the newest way to listen to the station “on the go”. I mean literally.

Listen to Y101 on your iPhone, iPod Touch or Nokia cellphones (selected units only, ex. 5800 Xpress Music). You need to download and install some software or plugins though for it to work.

Y101 could one of these days develop an iPhone app or a Java app for Nokia, so everyone can listen to the station without installing the Nokia PC suite for instance. Right now, it’s nearly impossible to listen to traditional online streaming if you are just using the conventional WAP browser.

But for now, this is all how it works, just click here to get instructions.

I am yet to try this. But I recommend if you are in Cebu or within Y101’s coverage, you are better off using your cellphone’s built-in FM radio tuner. Unless, of course you want to spend Php20.00 per hour listening to the station.

OFWs Share Their Stories on Cyber Pinoy Radio

Buhay OFW on Cyber Pinoy Radio
Buhay OFW on Cyber Pinoy Radio

Cyber Pinoy Radio is proud to unveil its newest show – Buhay OFW. Hosted by DJ Bless, an OFW herself, the new radio show features stories and experiences of Overseas Filipino Workers.

Being homesick is just one of the many challenges an OFW faces. In fact, this is one of the reasons why the people behind Cyber Pinoy Radio launched the station. Cyber Pinoy Radio is not just an internet radio, it’s a community of Pinoys working in Europe, Middle East, and in the USA, to name a few. Listeners and djs interact through chat and what could probably ease homesickness than to be able to request and listen to home-grown Pinoy music.

DWRR 101.9 Flips to Tambayan 101.9

Tambayan 101.9

On November 4, 2009, finally the most awaited re-branding will arrive. Tambayan 101.9 is the new sound, the new face, and the name of DWRR 101.9. DWRR has lifted its supposed re-launching in October 2009 due to the Typhoons Ondoy and Pepeng.

Tambayan 101.9 is sporting the slogan … “Sa’n Ka Pa” (Where else?) Tambayan is a Filipino slang for “a place to hang-out”. The logo is predominantly blue, red, and white, with a fancy font, a hint that the station’s new personality is made even more upbeat, fun, and more mass appealing. I just find the couch icon to be a little off, it’s more of a TV icon than radio.

Tambayan 101.9 is set to officially launch on air November 4, 2009. A launching event called Destination:RadioTopia will take place 7pm, at the A. Venue Hall, Makati Avenue, Makati City.

Listen to Tambayan 101.9 Online

Hang out with your favorite For Life DJs who are still going to be around at Tambayan 101.9, on air and online at http://www.tambayan1019.com and you can go to Tambayan 101.9 website for Tambayers and fans.

Teasers were airing on the station days before the official launch, all calling to listen to a change that will take place on the 4th of November.

DWRR FM’s New Brand Launch Delayed

Evolution of DWRR Brand

Waiting in anticipation since October 1, 2009, fans and radio listeners are keeping their seat belts tight for a new 101.9 DWRR brand to launch very soon. Meantime, the station goes on an automated jock-less mode and identifies itself as ABS-CBN 101.9. According to DJ Laila, the DJs are still around but are only spinning until official launch of the new brand.

No one knows for now if this re-branding is a complete format flip or just a new logo launch. DWRR, has had many rebrandings in the past from KO Radio in 1986, Zoo 101.9 in 1987, Radio Romance in 1989, WRR 101.9 in 1996, “Alam Mo Na ‘Yan! 101.9 For Life!” in 2005, and Bespren 101.9 For Life in 2009.

While everyone’s speculating on the precise day of the launch, some are thinking that the station will embrace the network’s provincial FM brand M.O.R. (My Only Radio). It won’t be for long though, if it’s going to be M.O.R. 101.9 or something else.

In the meantime, let’s take a trip back in time with the evolution of the DWRR 101.9 logo and jingles.

Pinoy Radio UK: Interview with Sonny Laragan, Station Manager

The Pinoy Radio UK Logo - a new all OPM internet station based in London
The Pinoy Radio UK Logo - a new all OPM internet station based in London

Pinoy Radio UK is the first and only 24/7 online radio in the United Kingdom and Europe playing purely Original Pilipino Music (OPM). It’s broadcasting from the heart of the UK with studios in London, England. Songs composed and performed by Filipino artists from the 70s up to today’s current OPM hits are featured on the station.

Sonny Laragan is the station manager of Pinoy Radio UK and he generously took time with us to share the story and sound of the new Pinoy internet station.

1. How did the idea of putting up Pinoy Radio UK come up?

Sonny Laragan - Station Manager
Sonny Laragan - Station Manager

Actually, the plan is to have a pinoy radio station in every country here in Europe. Everything starts here in London first. We plan on having O/B (outdoor) broadcast vans for remotes.

Then if everything works out fine, then we start another radio station in Italy. It would be Pinoy Radio Italia. We could base the station in Italy in Milan probably as we have the biggest concentration of pinoys in the city. We would try to expand to Rome and other main cities of Italy.

After Italy…the 3rd priority for establishing a pinoy radio station would be Austria (Viennna & Salzburg). Then the rest would follow. However, I would have to create a base in Manila as well to serve as a news center for all radio stations in Europe.

2. What is the goal of Pinoy Radio UK ?

The idea of putting up the station began 3 or 4 years ago. My objective was to create a station that would be 100% OPM. To play songs either composed or performed by Filipino artists/singers.

3. What are the programs, shows, and segments of Pinoy Radio UK?

The planned programs are as follows:

Sunday Live (2 – 5 pm UK / 9pm – 12 mn RP) The aim for this show is to have a guest singer/band on the program and give the listeners a chance to interview the guests on the show.

On The Spot (1 – 2 pm UK / 8 -9 pm RP) A hour of songs of a featured artist of the week.

Sabado Night Pary (9pm – 12 mn UK / 4 – 7 am RP) 3 hours of dance and uptempo songs

Nigh Jam (Weeknights 9 – 11 pm UK / 4 – 7 am RP) A 2 hour call-in talk program

These are initial programs that we would have on the station.

4. How many DJs do you have?

We’re still building the team and the station is a work in progress.

So there you have it. Mr. Sonny Laragan, Station Manager of Pinoy Radio UK. We’ll be hearing more from Pinoy Radio UK as they add new DJs and more stations in key European cities.
