iFM 93.9 Launches Website Soon, Crushes Love Radio and DWRR

After a significant upgrade on their broadcast equipment, Metro Manila’s Pwede station is now launching its own website – http://www.ifm.com.ph. Don’t be frustrated though, the site is still under construction. But definitely, we’ll be expecting exciting things especially now that the station is all up and ready for a big battle.

I personally talked to one of the execs at iFM Manila and they said they will be giving Love Radio, 101.9 DWRR and Barangay LS a run for their money. Seriously, I am 100% confident that iFM will be leading the MM market within the year. Here’s why:

  • Among the radio stations in the Manila, particularly the MASA ones, iFM has the smartest programming and production. iFM may not have a Nicole-Hyala or Chris-Tsuper, but the station definitely has a good selection of music. Just give 93.9 a listen, and you will hear the difference.
  • And speaking of difference – iFM, as mentioned earlier, just upgraded its transmitter. I believe it’s now broadcasting the most if not all of Luzon. But it’s not just only all about COVERAGE, it’s also about CLARITY. When you tune to 93.9 right now, you’ll find it hard to tell the difference between listening to a CD and iFM.
  • iFM is creative. You will find most of its segments very original like the Horoscope ni Tomas, And Mahiwagang Ballpen and many more.

iFM is the first and only radio station in the Philippines that broadcasts in HD. HD Radio or High Definition Radio is now the latest radio broadcast technology in US. In time, HD Radio will replace analog radio broadcast, which really sounds really like HDTVs replacing big bulky tube TVs. HD Radio is digital which means it can transmit data like the song title or weather report which will appear on the ticker of an HD Radio set. Another remarkable thing about HD Radio is you can listen to a variety of music channels from just one radio station frequency.

I also found out that iFM Cebu and Davao are next in the line of broadcast upgrades. Can’t wait for iFM to rule.

There are only a handful of radio stations in the Philippines that don’t sacrifice quality programming for commercialism, iFM is one of them. My hats off to Radio Mindanao Network for coming up with brilliant ideas for radio listeners. Keep it up and crush those radio stations that are running only after money!

Energy FM Perks Up Online and On Air

Energy FM 91.5 Metro Manila

There are, without a doubt, a lot of new things coming along on the airwaves of Metro Manila. Energy FM, a Manny Luzon-managed FM network just recently upgraded its technical aspects which means that their flagship station in Manila is getting stronger. After years, finally the Energyfm.fm website got revamped.

You will also notice an obvious transformation of Energy FM’s on air and graphical logo. The Hi-Pangga brand seems to work very effectively, competing side by side with rival stations’ Bestpren, Kabisyo, Kapuso and whatever.

Sad to say though that there is no online streaming link on the new Energyfm.fm website. Unfortunately too, the website is not geared towards their target audience. I should say that their website should have been in Filipino. I believe their website is kind of boring. But it’s better than nothing.

Have a look at Energy FM’s website at http://www.energyfm.fm but don’t expect too much.

Here in Metro Cebu, I’d like to commend Energy FM though for crafting good programming. From a listener’s point of view, I believe Energy FM 94.7 is able to live up to its name here. Way to go!

Leona Lewis’ Bleeding Love continues to dominate the charts across three radio formats AC, Hot AC and CHR. Leona’s charm and interesting personality, not to mention the fact that she’s a Simon Cowell talent, seem to giver her plenty of advantage.

Jordin Sparks - One At A TimeJordin Sparks is coming up with a follow up to her No Air single which features Chris Brown. The title of the new single is “One Step At A Time”. You can Listen to the track here. The track is a little rhythmic but still has some softness which makes it fitting to be called a ballad.

Rihanna’s Take A Bow is also gaining a lot of airplays lately. Although not all fans are quite impressed with her new boyish haircut. Some say she looks like a Halle Berry while some thinks she’s a guy with boobs. Oh!

Realize by Colbie Caillat is still doing pretty strong. Make sure to add this song to your playlist as this for me is a breather to most of the rhythmic songs that flock today’s playlists.

Mariah Carey - Bye ByeThe biggest newcomer to the soft pop and ballads side of radio hitlists is Mariah Careys’ Bye Bye. Big because it’s a Mariah Carey, plus the fact that her latest Bahamas wedding is giving her such a big favor of publicity. Anyway, your radio station should definitely include it in your weekly or daily countdown.

The song is quite predictable though. But still catchy enough to qualify as a culprit for last song syndrome. This song though, I believe will have a very short shelf life. So, your radio station should play it while it’s still hot.

Well, speaking of big and Mariah Carey, here is a sure huge hit that’s been like gaining a mammoth amount of requests and airplays. David Cook’s cover for Always Be My Baby is now one of the most played songs in Metro Manila, Cebu and Davao. I don’t think major stations in the US are giving this guy a chance.

David Cook - Always Be My BabyI think David Cook’s success can be attributed to the fact that he’s a Chris Daughtry sound-a-like. Oops, no offence to DC fans, because I’m a DC fan too. People are like wanting to hear more Daughtry songs.

New Kids On The Block Returns: Summertime

New Kids On The Block Summertime free mp3 download2007 was the year when Spice Girls returned in the music scene. It did create a ripple but not that quite. Now come summer of 2008 another 90s pop music phenomenon is returning and these guys are blowing fans away in the US and in around the world. The NKOTB is back with a “synthy” pop track called Summertime, just a perfect comeback song for the 90s boy band which of course we last heard back in 1994.

It’s been indeed fourteen years since we heard the guys performing and almost like ten years since we last heard Jordan Knight and Joey McIntyre who both went solo in the late 90s. One of Jordan Knight’s memorable solo hits is Give It To You. Joey McIntyre went with the softer side of pop as he is best remembered with the song Stay The Same.

The album is yet to be named but all digital stores will be officially opening their sales for the New Kids On The Block returning album on May 13. The group’s first public performance will be in New York during the Z100 FM Zootopia Concert on May 17.

Make sure your radio station is going to be right on the time when the album will be out. Make sure too that you will be the first station to introduce it on your market. In the US as of first week of May, Summertime has already reached the second spot on the list of the most played new singles.

Blogging has definitely changed the way people communicate nowadays. If blogging has been invented years back when I was still in radio, I’d probably still be in radio. But nah, no regrets. Blogs have helped me today more than ever before and more than it would have had it appeared ten years ago.

My favorite part about blogging is information sharing. And this week for the first, I’m starting a new streak in this website which will feature blogs that’s all dedicated to radio. Anything radio, that is. And this week, I’ll take this chance to put the spotlight on DisKorner.

DisKorner is maintained by Ronald of Albay. Oh, you can check out the site at www.diskorner.blogspot.com. Ronald’s a DJ. His blog’s not totally a radio nut, he blogs anything from disease to 99.5 Campus Radio. What I love about his blog though is its concise content. There is just so much you can need to do on the internet these days, so blog posts need to be brief but still punchy.

How to Make Sweepers & Liners That Jump Out Of The Speaker

One of the biggest challenges of producing a station liner is how to effectively turn a 3 seconder into a memorable station imaging piece. Recently, I made some liners for DJ Sky of Sky FM Online, the task is to make a series of liners with just a simple copy, bearing only the words “DJ Sky on Sky FM”.

Since it’s short, the produced ID should be made quick and tight, yet audible enough for the listener to digest the message. When it came time to record the liners, I made different reads and takes. I went from fast to slow and choose only the best voice tracks.

When it was time to enhance the raw voice over, I needed to apply industry-standard tweakings to make the liners pop out of the speakers. On the illustration below, you’ll see the original waveform of the raw voice track.

At a recent RAB Radio Sales Training Academy program for managers, one of the students asked me what I thought was the most important personal characteristic of a successful Radio salesperson.

At lot of ideas came to mind, including the desire to succeed, commitment to the job, willingness to work hard, ability to overcome obstacles, eagerness to have performance measured and rewarded, etc. But it occurred to me that one of the key traits of the best salespeople I know is having an insatiable curiosity.

Great Radio salespeople always want to know more! More about marketing and advertising; more about Radio; more about their competitors; more about the industries they’re calling on; and most importantly, more about the wants and needs of their clients and prospects.

Someone once said that “knowledge is power.” Actually, that’s not true. Knowledge is potential. Applied knowledge is power. But when applied properly, knowledge provides the momentum that drives success.

Why Pinoy Radio Stations Are Superior Over American Stations

If I am to compare the present state of Philippine radio stations against US stations, I say Pinoy stations are way superior. Programming wise and sales wise, Philippine stations are more effective. Here is a list to explain.

1. Our music programming is far better than theirs.

Here in the Philippines, there are five formats that thrive Newstalk, Hot AC, AC, CHR and Contemporary Christian. In America, there is a radio station for each conceivable format. However, our playlists here in the Philippines are not limited to Top 40 songs. Programs are more diverse and the choice of music being aired are far broader. You don’t get to hear the same song in the next 30 minutes here in our country.

2. Our shows are more localized.

Syndicated shows are good, they keep listeners hooked, improve sales and lower expenses. But programming consolidation kills program localization. That is why most major FM networks in the Philippines prefer to have their stations programmed locally. Yes FM’s Nicole Hyala and Chris Tsuper are famous in Manila, but they have local hosts for their morning shows at Yes FM Davao.

3.  Our station imaging and branding are more creative.

Radio monikers in the US sound the same wherever you are. Of course it also happens here in the Philippines. But come on, these radio station names are just so unique Wow Nindota Ah!, Radyo Natin, OK FM, Bigsound FM, Thunder Radio, Lovely FM, Campus FM, Barangay LS, My Only Radio, For Life 101.9 and Lupig Sila.

4. Our radio talents here are more talented.

Our disc jockeys here don’t just make bla blas on air. They do sales, they prepare the news, they produce commercials and promo spots.

This is perhaps the reason why our disc jockeys are in demand abroad. I know a pinoy DJ who now works at E fm in Sri Lanka. And if you happen to know Supermario, he used to be at Yes FM Manila, today, he’s a very popular jock at Power 98 FM in Singapore.

Another reason why our radio industry in the Philippines is still very healthy compared to Americans, is the fact that we are not plagued with media competition. iPods sure are a hit in the country, but our radio stations are not threatened with their existence. American stations do, in fact, iPod is not only their biggest threat, they have internet radio and satellite radio. Philippine radio stations do not keep a top 40 playlist that’s why our listeners don’t get bored. Our stations produce creative, original and local flavored shows that’s why our listeners stick. And best of all, we’ve got killer talents! So even if iPods and mp3 players become so affordable, people will still listen to terrestrial radio here in the Philippines.
