Why Some Rihanna, Ne-Yo, Beyonce Songs Sound The Same?

Some songs from Rihanna, Chris Brown, Ne-Yo and Beyonce sound the same. Why?
Some songs from Rihanna, Chris Brown, Ne-Yo and Beyonce sound the same. Why?

What do Rihanna, Ne-Yo, Beyonce, and UK boyband Blue have in common? Well, they all got monster hits. But of course, behind those monster hits are the creative minds and among them are the producers. Ever heard of Max Martin? Well, if you are a huge 90s pop music fanatic who went gaga over songs like Get Down, Baby One More Time, and Bye Bye Bye to name few, then you should have heard the songs of Max Martin. He is the creative brain and hands, in short he is the producer who helped the earlier successes of Britney Spears, Backstreet Boys, and NSYNC. Max Martin had even collaborated with Pink.

Max Martin doesn’t have anything to do with Rihanna, Ne-Yo, and Beyonce today. But all three have their own Max Martin version and theirs is called the Stargate Duo. These production team is composed of two guys from Norway. Stargate was responsible for the backing tracks behind the successful Irreplaceable (which also influenced a later hit song for Chris Brown titled With You). Stargate was also responsible for the backing tracks of Ne-Yo’s So Sick. And the latest is Rihanna’s Take A Bow.

Don’t you notice all of these tracks have the same sound design elements. All of the three songs have that noticeable clapping beat on the backing tracks, right? Well, of course they sound the same since they all come from the same producer.

But my point is, the same thing that happened during the Max Martin is starting to come out again. We are being served with the same stuff over and over again. I mean like yeah, we love Ne Yo, we love Rihanna, and we LOVE Beyonce way too much, but we need to be creative here. I know the Stargate Duo are making money out of their stuff. But I hope they don’t give us too much of a cookie cutter music.

stargate-jpegOne of Stargate’s latest projects is the song for Shontelle – it’s called T-Shirt. I remember one time, I made a post about Shontelle’s T-Shirt song, and a comment poster said the song sounded like a crossover between Chris Brown’s With You and Jordin Spark’s “Tattoo…”. Check out the post here.

Well, that’s what we call commercialism. When something is selling hot, the tendency is, people will likely to serve you the same stuff over and over again, until we consumers get lost in boredom and oblivion.

I didn’t know though that Stargate was also behind the songs for the Brit boyband Blue. You know, the songs like All Rise, If You Come Back To Me, and stuffs. Huh! And Stargate also did the backing tracks for a not-so-popular but one of my fave boybands in the 90s – 5IVE. Remember them?  5IVE – five bad boys with the power to rock, blowing your mind, so we gotta get into, five, what you waiting 4, if  you want it, 3, 2, 1, let’s hit it. Huh, those were the days.

Anyway, please share your thoughts on this, just post up your comment. Thanchu!

Oh, just a minute, check out this video on Billboard about this Stargate thing!

Disturbia by Rihanna is Picking Up So Fast!

Rihanna - Disturbia

As of this post, the top three fastest climbing songs in terms of playlist rotation are:

  1. Jonas Brothers – Burning Up (Click to listen)
  2. Rihanna – Disturbia (Click to listen)
  3. Pussy Cat Dolls – When I Grow Up (Click to listen)

This data is based on the playlist of all the major market Top 40 stations in the United States. It’s not surprising to know that most of these songs are rhythmic.

Jonas Brothers’ Burning Up has just premiered, but thanks to the fan-fueled publicity it’s now enjoying high rotations. The Jonas Brothers are going the same track as Jesse McCartney is going right now. It seems that pop rock artists are going into more rhythmic songs now. Jesse’s trying to sound like a Chris Brown. Now Jonas Brothers want to sound like Justin Timberlake?!

PCD is still doing great in iTunes, hitcharts and playlist. The infectious song definitely is worth its current position.

Rihanna’s Disturbia should supposedly be earning more rotations since it came out ahead of the Jonas Bros’ new hit. Disturbia again is another big dance track. Reminds you of how Rihanna moved the world with Don’t Stop The Music. Click here to listen for yourself.

That’s about it now for the latest updates in the world of radio playlists. Check out for more updates.

Radio Hitlist Update for May 2008: Leona Lewis Tops Charts in Q1

Bleeding Love - Leona Lewis Tops Radio Hitlist and Hit Charts

Pop, Ballads

Leona Lewis’ Bleeding Love continues to dominate the charts across three radio formats AC, Hot AC and CHR. Leona’s charm and interesting personality, not to mention the fact that she’s a Simon Cowell talent, seem to giver her plenty of advantage.

Check out the Jason Nevins remix for Bleeding Love. Click here.

Jordin Sparks - One At A TimeJordin Sparks is coming up with a follow up to her No Air single which features Chris Brown. The title of the new single is “One Step At A Time”. You can Listen to the track here. The track is a little rhythmic but still has some softness which makes it fitting to be called a ballad.

Rihanna’s Take A Bow is also gaining a lot of airplays lately. Although not all fans are quite impressed with her new boyish haircut. Some say she looks like a Halle Berry while some thinks she’s a guy with boobs. Oh!

Realize by Colbie Caillat is still doing pretty strong. Make sure to add this song to your playlist as this for me is a breather to most of the rhythmic songs that flock today’s playlists.

Mariah Carey - Bye ByeThe biggest newcomer to the soft pop and ballads side of radio hitlists is Mariah Careys’ Bye Bye. Big because it’s a Mariah Carey, plus the fact that her latest Bahamas wedding is giving her such a big favor of publicity. Anyway, your radio station should definitely include it in your weekly or daily countdown.

The song is quite predictable though. But still catchy enough to qualify as a culprit for last song syndrome. This song though, I believe will have a very short shelf life. So, your radio station should play it while it’s still hot.

Rock

Well, speaking of big and Mariah Carey, here is a sure huge hit that’s been like gaining a mammoth amount of requests and airplays. David Cook’s cover for Always Be My Baby is now one of the most played songs in Metro Manila, Cebu and Davao. I don’t think major stations in the US are giving this guy a chance.

David Cook - Always Be My BabyI think David Cook’s success can be attributed to the fact that he’s a Chris Daughtry sound-a-like. Oops, no offence to DC fans, because I’m a DC fan too. People are like wanting to hear more Daughtry songs.

New Kids On The Block Returns: Summertime

New Kids On The Block Summertime free mp3 download2007 was the year when Spice Girls returned in the music scene. It did create a ripple but not that quite. Now come summer of 2008 another 90s pop music phenomenon is returning and these guys are blowing fans away in the US and in around the world. The NKOTB is back with a “synthy” pop track called Summertime, just a perfect comeback song for the 90s boy band which of course we last heard back in 1994.

It’s been indeed fourteen years since we heard the guys performing and almost like ten years since we last heard Jordan Knight and Joey McIntyre who both went solo in the late 90s. One of Jordan Knight’s memorable solo hits is Give It To You. Joey McIntyre went with the softer side of pop as he is best remembered with the song Stay The Same.

The album is yet to be named but all digital stores will be officially opening their sales for the New Kids On The Block returning album on May 13. The group’s first public performance will be in New York during the Z100 FM Zootopia Concert on May 17.

Make sure your radio station is going to be right on the time when the album will be out. Make sure too that you will be the first station to introduce it on your market. In the US as of first week of May, Summertime has already reached the second spot on the list of the most played new singles.

Fans and the not-so-fans of Britney’s bizzare behavior will start feasting on her new studio album, with the “leak out” of her fifth studio album’s “Gimme More”.

Entertainment Weekly reports that the track is “up-tempo club cut produced by Timbaland protégé Nate ”Danjahandz” Hills (Justin Timberlake, T.I.). ”Gimme More” was also reported as the name of the music video that Spears was spotted shooting in July. (Representatives for Jive, Spears’ label, did not return calls seeking comment.)

”People are going to love [the new single],” raved the source. ”It’s like when Justin came back [with FutureSex/LoveSounds] — she’s got a whole new sound. She’s funky.”
