99.5 Campus FM Aircheck

I pulled a Campus FM off air montage last night, I caught Jimmy Jam on the air from 5-7 pm. He was having this cut-by-the-vocals ‘syndrome’ which is of course common among DJs. It was like at the top of the 5 pm drive when Jimmy Jam introed a Linkin Park song only to be caught by the vocals. I am always been a big fan of Jimmy Jam, but I believe the guy has an excellent talent in reinventing himself. Not because he was absent for a while in a CHR radio, but his style is just so 90s. (I’m sorry)

Big deep voices on the radio are not obsolete, they sound best in promos and liners. These days, what sells and cuts through in DJing are the boy-next door type of DJ voices. Gone are the days of the old Rick Dees or Casey Casem style of disc jockeying, so I should say my dear friend should reinvent himself.

Not in a way, that he should sound like a 16 year old kid. It’s just that the usual DJing stuff just don’t cut it anymore.

Anyway, I’d like to commend 99.5 Campus FM for a having a decent radio station imaging. Nothing beats a simple non-processed voiceover liners that say the words “99.5 Campus FM Is The Number One Hit Music Station in Metro Manila”. The traffic promo was nicely done, just lengthy though.

iPod Kills the Radio Star

First is the good news. Mobile radio is getting a good nod from cellphone users. In a recent report, TNS Global Telecoms found that 43% of all mobile users listen to some form of music on their phones, and 73% of smartphones double as music players. And while the use of MP3 players on phones is up 78% in the last year, mobile radio uptake has seen a whopping 140% increase.

TNS — which polled an astounding 16,000 consumers in 29 countries for the study — also found that 45% of users list AM/FM as one of the top three factors in purchasing a mobile phone. Meanwhile, a recent study from the Pew Internet & American Life Project found that 17% of U.S. mobile users play music on their phones, nearly matching the 19% who use mobile e-mail or surf the wireless Web.

What do these mean? These mean that radio is not dead. However, something and someone is going to put radio to the death throne.

Will 99.5 Campus FM Be Successful? Questions About the Return of Campus Radio

I was so damn right when I guessed that Campus Radio will be returning today as Campus FM. Please refer to my blog post on March 13, 2008 here “Campus Radio Returns Easter Sunday as Campus FM?”.

99.5 Campus FM SuccessI also would like to congratulate jsbata at PEX for guessing the right dial point for Campus Radio’s return. Please refer to his post here. But above all I would like to congratulate Real Radio, Jimmy Jam, John Hendrix, the Campus Radio fans, to those who helpe in the petition and everyone responsible for the return of the legend. Hats off! Now, the buzz about the return of Campus Radio was unquestionably hot. It turned out to be a very successful publicity stunt, so again congratulations to all of you. In the coming days,  you will start raking serious money. You have successfully grabbed, combined and built a good market.

The questionable part however is that will this Campus Radio/Campus FM-return frenzy stay for long. Will this give Real Radio high ratings? Will Jimmy Jam and John Hendrix and the rest of the Campus FM staff live up to the expectations of the listeners? Will it turn out to be a real HIT this time? Will Jimmy Jam and John Hendrix become a victim again of MASS TERMINATION?

The answer? We will never know.

Campus Radio Relaunch

It’s midnight of March 21, 2008 when I wrote this post, just barely two days before the re-opening, re-broadcast and re-launch of the new Campus Radio. Easter Sunday definitely means the start of the new school year.

Meanwhile, here’s a fresh radio sales tip from RAB, great to use when sales drive resumes on Monday.

Team Approach – Use a team approach toward marketing. Include input from manufacturer brand managers and field marketers, category managers and store ops. When learning about a retailer, determine key initiatives and destination categories in order to find the most powerful decision makers and create programs with the best chance of gaining approval.

Jesse McCartney Is Leavin Teeny Bop Songs

Jesse McCartney is surely stripping off his teeny boppy appeal with his latest single called “Leavin”. “Leavin” is a rhyhtmic pop music track that’s sure to be a big hit this summer here in the Philippines. In the U.S. the Jesse McCartney song is slowly gaining more frequent rotations in the spring playlist.

The video for Leavin has indeed made Jesse McCartney leave his cutie approach with sexy scenes. The song Leavin itself is  also a testament of McCartney’s drive to get into more mature music making. In fact, you can hardly hear traces of the old Jesse McCartney sound which I found awfully resembling Aaron Carter or his brother Nick.

Campus Radio Returns Easter Sunday as Campus FM?

No details however about the re-launch. In fact, there is still no definite dial point set for the new Campus Radio. My hunch says that the people behind the return are dropping the “Campus Radio” logo and instead will be using “Campus FM”.

Here’s a probable reason. “Campus Radio” is still a GMA property. However, they can have the word “Campus”. My first guess was that the guys will be using “Campus XX.X” (with X as the new dial point). But I am pretty much sure that ‘Campus FM’ will push through.

The exchange of comments and speculations are still hot on pinoyexchange.com and on a Friendster-like website www.campusradio.co.nr. But as Jimmy Jam says in his blog www.bigbadjimmyjam.blogspot.com “facts shall reveal themselves further, as the proverbial plot thickens”.
