Are Your Jingles Worn Out? Top 10 Causes

Are Your Jingles Worn Out

Or probably, you’re not noticing it. But your listeners could be sick of listening to the same jingles that you have been airing for the past 10 years. Just like the number 1 song on the chart, your jingles’ popularity will also eventually fade out.

So what is a worn out jingle. First, let’s take a look at what it’s not. It’s not the same as your favorite worn out pair of jeans. Worn out jingles are not actually the main problem, but they are only symptoms of an even more serious condition.

So what causes worn out jingles? Here is a list.

1. A PD who can’t get over his favorite 10-year old jingle package.
2. Station owner who is either tight on budget or just don’t think spending more money on jingles is a necessity.
3. Station that doesn’t have an imaging director.
4. Station that does have an imaging director but isn’t functioning.
5. Station that channels all its efforts to contests, music programming and others but less or no consideration on imaging.
6. A PD who thinks that modern jingles are noisy.
7. A PD who thinks that the only way to create a jingle is to have voice guy read the station slogan and the station name, then put some lame FX behind it.
8. A PD who thinks that their station imaging doesn’t need a constant update.
9. A PD who thinks he is the only one fit to voice their station.
10. A PD who doesn’t realize he now lives in the 21st century.

There might actually be more causes, but the point of this is that if you tire your jingles, you are also tiring your listeners’ ears. Refreshing your jingles is as important as refreshing your playlist.

The diagnosis is clear, if your station suffers from having worn out jingles, consult a professional imaging director now, before it complicates to a more serious condition – a drop in ratings.

So You Need Radio Voice, Imaging and Production Services

We often hear these terms and we tend to use them loosely to the point of interchanging. There is a huge line drawn between radio voiceovers, radio imaging and radio production services. So what is the difference?

The question really is “what do you need”.

Voiceover – services such as these vary in terms of application. Voiceover services cater to audio book publishers, movie producers, apart from radio stations. When a company offers VOs, it means, they put voice into your scripts or copy.

You will not be expecting sound effects or production music included. However some VO artists give you option to put voice effects such as reverse, echo, etc.

“There is no right or wrong radio jingle company, there is only the right solution for your need.”

Imaging – requires a sit down with the program director if not the entire radio staff. It involves a process from conceptualizing, copy writing, hiring the appropriate voice person to production.

Companies who offer imaging services help you get the audio personality you want for your station. They don’t just offer you voice pipes, but brains and plenty of man-hours.

Production – companies who offer production either produce for you or sell production libraries (FX and music). You get the idea, you provide the voice and they will add FX, drops and music to create a sweeper or a promo.

Production companies may have an in-house or third party VO supplier.

You may go for a company that offers all 3 services: voiceover, imaging and production or you may choose a single service. There is no right or wrong radio jingle company, there is only the right solution for your need.

Jingles for Internet Radio: What You Should Know

Jingles for Internet Radio

Unlike terrestrial radio, there are no limits to what you can do on internet radio as far radio imaging is concerned. There is no PPM to consider, so creativity is not compromised.

Here is a list of things to consider when you are getting jingles for internet radio.

Creative and Entertaining

There is no such thing as competition in internet radio. Your biggest enemy though is boredom. Don’t just create the usual slogan-plus-station logo jingle, write liners that are fun and memorable.

Incorporate songs into jingles, whether you are a music or a news-talk station, listeners love to hear familiar song clips from your jingles.

Fresh and Updated

Your jingles are just like your program, website and your music playlist, they also need a regular update. Remember, your biggest enemy is boredom, and you don’t want to bore your listeners with the same jingles.

Come up with fresh liners every month. Take it from celebrations, holidays or pop culture as topic/theme for your new jingles.

For example, during Halloween, produce and air jingles that are relevant to the season.

Contemporary Production

Sounding new may not always mean cutting edge. In order for you to stand out among the many internet stations, you have to use the latest tools and production techniques. Since not all internet stations have their in-house jingle producer, so they outsource production.

There are a lot of jingle companies online that offer 24 hour delivery. The key is to find the right sound for your station.

Affordable and Quality Radio Jingles and Sweepers

In the US alone, there are roughly 57 million listeners tune in to internet. The industry is now worth $500 million, a big jump from what it used to be $49 million in 2003.

1. Bargain Jingles

Bargain sung jingle packages are those that were released for quite some time now. While dated, you get the same production value as those from packages released recently. StudioDragonfly.com has a library of jingle packages in the 1990s, great if you are a 90s or AC format station.

2. Internet-only Production Service

Look for companies that offer exclusive or mostly internet radio services. Their rates are specifically adjusted for the small scale stations, but you get a major-market production quality. www.iJingles.com offers sung jingles, JeffRadio.com  is a legend.

3. Hospital Radio or Nonprofit Stations Imaging Companies

There are no companies actually that offer exclusive services to hospital radio, but there are some that cater to these kinds of market. Internet radio stations might find jingle rates for Hospital Radio, College and Community Radio appealing. www.Devaweb.co.uk offers great services.

4. Local Radio Producers

A practical option. Have someone in your local FM stations voice and produce jingles for you.

5. Referrals

Ask someone who operates a streaming station about where to go for less expensive but great-sounding jingles.

Tip:

To achieve the best-fitting sound for your station, you have to identify the kind of audio personality you want for your station. Do you want a young energetic sound or a warm and friendly, easy-listening style?

Internet radio indeed is a huge and growing industry, which translates to a big demand for voiceover, presenting and radio imaging. Whether you are a newbie or a pro in this field, your goal is not just to stand out but also to withstand competition. Internet radio has become competitive and while budget is still a constraint, you can still choose to go for cheap but quality jingles.

DWRR FM’s New Brand Launch Delayed

Evolution of DWRR Brand

Waiting in anticipation since October 1, 2009, fans and radio listeners are keeping their seat belts tight for a new 101.9 DWRR brand to launch very soon. Meantime, the station goes on an automated jock-less mode and identifies itself as ABS-CBN 101.9. According to DJ Laila, the DJs are still around but are only spinning until official launch of the new brand.

No one knows for now if this re-branding is a complete format flip or just a new logo launch. DWRR, has had many rebrandings in the past from KO Radio in 1986, Zoo 101.9 in 1987, Radio Romance in 1989, WRR 101.9 in 1996, “Alam Mo Na ‘Yan! 101.9 For Life!” in 2005, and Bespren 101.9 For Life in 2009.

While everyone’s speculating on the precise day of the launch, some are thinking that the station will embrace the network’s provincial FM brand M.O.R. (My Only Radio). It won’t be for long though, if it’s going to be M.O.R. 101.9 or something else.

In the meantime, let’s take a trip back in time with the evolution of the DWRR 101.9 logo and jingles.

The 96.3 FM Band in Metro Manila has had been the favorite destination of listeners for many years when it comes to light rock music. 96.3 WRock is the epitome of AC radio in the Philippines, with franchises operating in Cebu, Bacolod, and Davao.

Aside from the signature light rock format, 96.3 was best remembered for its popular radio jingles from TM Century, which were originally produced for 96.7 FM K-Lite. (You can listen to the original KLite jingles here)

After its re-branding to Easy Rock and acquisition by Cebu Broadcasting Company in 2008, 96.3 gets a facelift with contemporary AC jingles from ReelWorld.

The purchase of the new set of jingles seems continue the tradition of its preceding brand. The new Easy Rock jingles resembles the melodic themes and emotional lyrics of the WRock’s jingles.

The new jingles are lifted from the Delilah, a syndicated AC radio program in the US. Here are the jingles for 96.3 Easy Rock, from ReelWorld. Thanks to j5bata for the up.

99.5 DWR-TFM Jingles Complete

The first time I was in Manila, the first radio station I tuned into was DWR-TFM, undoubtedly it was the Z100 or the KIIS FM of the Philippines. 99.5 had and always has the complete ingredients that makes a CHR station complete. Great jocks, cool contests, and four to floor radio imaging.

DWR-TFM surely has the best radio imaging in town. You name it, they got jingles from TM Century to Thompson Creative.

Their jingles really defined what CHR station should be in the Philippines. My friend here j5bata shared his airchecks and off air montage of DWR-TFM jingles. I didn’t know there were more of them.

One of the resings here, I recognize it coming from an original KIIS jingle package.

The rest, wow, some jingles are classic, that date back to the PAMS era. PAMS was the popular jingle company in the U.S. in the 50s. Check out the jingles here on his YouTube video.
